Default Daily random thought: blinker/lane change

I've noticed most newer vehicles have the soft tap of the blinker for lane changes and it flashes (usually) 3 times. It's a nice feature and I use it all the time, but why only 3 times?

Steps for changing lanes are as follows:

  1. Turn on your signal.
  2. Check your mirrors.
  3. Check your blind spot by looking over your shoulder.
  4. If it is safe, change lanes.
  5. Turn off your signal after completing the lane change.
Who does all of that in under 3 seconds? This isn't NASCAR. I'd think 5 or 6 would be more appropriate. Thoughts?

Three is 3x more than zero. But I'll agree, I'm a class A driver and signal comes off when I've completed the lane change.

But what needs to happen with these modern vehicles with lane assist, a lane change can NOT occur unless the signal light is used! (Obviously there would have to be some sort of override system in case of emergencies) That would fix all the inconsiderate bastards on the roads today.

I am pretty sure its against the law to use your turn signals in Florida. I know for sure its a serious offense in South Florida.

Driving with emergency flashers on in the rain is allowed as long you slow down to 3 mph and stay in the left lane.

Some cars you can change the number I seem to remember. My vw buses don't go off automatically. I drive around a lot with blinkers on a lot. It keeps others on their toes.

I turn the blinker on halfway through the lane change, there by preventing g being blocked from changing lanes by another driver.

I suggest an infinite setting, as about 1 in 10 drivers around here use that setting already.

My F150 fights me if I don't use a blinker. Obviously you can push through it, but it's definitely there to make you use it.

I do not know how Louisiana would be able to handle that, when I was living there and went to buy a turn signal bulb clerk laughed at me and said we don't stock those, when I asked why he said nobody buys them cause we don't use turn signal here!

Yes, seriously. Don't hit the signal until after you know it's safe to change lanes.

I would be happy if snowbirds understood why the lanes are marked.

Still don't agree. That's how I do it; and I'm still not fully in the next lane by the time they're off. I know I can change it with Forscan on a ford, but have to flash the module; and I worry they'll void the warranty if they know I've messed with it.

I think blinkers were outlawed where I live. In reality, I see them used maybe 50% of the time they should be.

I'm sure the "snowbirds" that give a #$%k have a bumper sticker saying that.
