The minivan traveled for another four miles before pulling off onto the road's grassy shoulder and the driver runs away from the vehicle on foot. A K9 officer eventually finds the suspect, Kip Thomas, 26, hiding on a Spring Hill property.

Our department uses it. The tracking map regularly freezes so you cannot effectively track the vehicle. As soon as the suspect vehicle gets the chance they stop and throw the dart in the ditch and drive away. The best one was when a suspect stuck the gps dart on another car at a stoplight.

It worked really well for about a month before the criminals figured out what was happening.

It's a pretty cool idea. Much safer that way vs keep perusing and risk other lives. They should put it on a cross bow with the blades that expand so the dart can't be pulled out easily.

Our Sheriff's office uses them.

Didn't really help the pursuit of the suspect. Seems like they kept contact with him the whole time.

In the not too distant future, they will have an electronic system to shut off the car being pursued. Just aim at a fleeing vehicle and flip switch. Car stops and end of the pursuit. Its only a matter of time. If of course, the ACLU doesn't whine that it's unconstitutional or illegal.

I would think it would be unconstitutional or illegal as well. Technology like that could be widely abused. It would start with vehicles being pursued, then some enterprising officer would say "Hey, let's not follow speeders anymore. We'll just point our magic wand at them and shut the car off. We'll be able to write a lot more tickets since we won't have to be running them down. And it will snowball from there.

I'm on the side of LE but somehow don't see the benefits outweighing the potential for abuse.

For safety reasons it wont stop a vehicle but only slow it's top speed to say 30 MPH.
May be a while but it's coming. Your electric meter can be shut down remotely now
if you have a smart meter.

What can the police buy that the criminal can not? Car jacking, etc, etc, will boil to an all time high! Then people will be suing the technology manufacture for putting their lives in danger.....then technology goes away.
