Question Sports Car Choice - Help Please

Hey there,

Yes I know THT is a boating forum but nice boats and nice cars go together so I am hoping you can help me out with trying to decide what sports car to get in the $100k range given the following:

1. I don't want a corvette or a mustang, too commonly seen around Florida
2. It has to look good and go fast ideally a convertible
3. Not too old, say no later than a 2010
4. No Japanese cars, I want something with some pedigree
5. I don't like to buy new cars, let someone else take the 50% depreciation before me

So far I am looking at:

2013 Viper GTC
2012 Lambo Gallardo
2015 Aston Vantage S convertible

I like the Viper for its brutality and crazy aero package and it can be tracked but is sounds and drives like a truck
I like the Gallardo for its exotic feel, sound and speed but it has a whiff of mid life crisis
I like the Vantage S convertible for the overall package though it is the slowest of the three

Any other cars I should be looking at? What are you thoughts on the above shortlist?

I think the viper will be best resale, lambo is too cheesy and most will think you rented it, aston is more of a boulevard cruiser. I personally would go for the Aston but my daily Driver is a Lexus LS Long wheelbase so I obviously lean towards more sedate vehicles.

If I wanted crazy power though I would go for the Viper. They are cool as hell.

Back in the day, I used to work in high end used sports cars. Lots of Lambos, some Astons, ferrari, vettes and others.
I have a list of questions comments for you.

How often do you plan on diving this car?
Have you ever driven cars like this before?
Besides fast and good looks are there any other things important to you?
Are you aware of the maintenance costs?
Comment: The Lambo will take a hit on resale value if not serviced at a dealer and has records.
Are you aware of the insurance costs?

Just some general comments on the cars you listed. I would pass on the Aston, they don't age well and look dated when they do age which creates a big dent in the used value. The Viper will have a cult following, in fact many older vipers are going up in value. The lambo will hold its value pretty steady and always be desirable.

Personally, I would not choose any of them though.

Just because you can waste 100k doesn't mean you should. It won't make you happy. Nothing material will. Take a vacation by yourself to somewhere and maybe drive a couple of those cars at a track. Give yourself some time to think about things. Maybe you should go camping if you enjoy that, or go somewhere that has meaning for you. Give yourself some quiet time just for yourself. Tell work you need a couple of weeks off and turn the cell phone off. Do something spontaneous. Talk to someone who you would never normally talk to. Get out of your comfort zone. You only will walk this earth once.

I wasted 7K on a BMW550 last year and I love the car. It does not make my life problems go away but I can forget about them for a bit when im taking an off-ramp at 115. My friend in NH thought I was crazy for spending $7K on a fun car when I already had new F150 with all the options. Maybe the OPs $100K is my $7K to him.

I'm about to put my Plymouth Prowler on the market, it's a 97 so it's old for your taste and it's not as fast as it seems you'd like but it does get loads of looks.

Send me a PM if you'd like a few photos.

Of the 3 you mention I'd go with the Austin but upkeep won't be cheap, it will be very expensive from a US car perspective.

Of your 3 options, the Gallardo is easily the best choice.

Sex appeal, sound, and speed. It has all 3.

Personally I'd go with late 60's early 70's American Muscle. Find one fully resto'ed, numbers matching and it will hold its value if not appreciate. Just do your homework before the purchase on vin#'s, options, etc.
