College Grrrr! Thanks UF!

Son goes to an All Boys private high school here in Miami,All AP it Honors classes, dual enrollment .
Had acceptable SAT 1390 and ACT 26 scores GPA 4.0.
Really wanted to go to UF to study engineering. Has already been accepted to FSU ,FIU amd Purdue even.
Would love Purdue for engineering but canít afford it .
Son immediately unfriended UF from whatever you unfriend someone from.
The real kick in the balls is another classmate got accepted to UF . Had lower GPA and SAT scores then my son did.
The only reason that kid made the minimum to apply was the help he received from my Son.

when its all said and done, no one really cares what school you graduated from! all that matters is how well you perform on the job!

college application and admissions processes are downright baffling and frustrating as hell.

if your son really wants UF, then he can transfer after freshman year. he probably shouldnt have unfriended them, and he certainly shouldnt go bashing them on social media (not saying that's what he did...but hopefully didnt out of frustration). plenty of kids transfer after freshman year...something like 10-20%...it's no big deal.

in all likelihood, he'll get on campus at FSU or wherever, and find a bunch of friends and never want to leave.

But getting your foot in the door is another thing, a lot of resumes are shit canned if the right school is not on the resume. It aint right, but life aint fair.

hey bud, was the 4.0 weighted or unweighted. Also did he have the volunteer stuff...
The reason i ask is my son will be applying this fall, just wanted to see if he has a shot.
thanks.

There are better engineering schools. Have him Visit LA Tech.
I went to Bama BSIE 93--Why because Auburn would not take me. Some things happen for reasons unknown.
Really have him look at LA Tech My older son goes there and I have been incredibly impressed with their Engineering Program. He should be eligible for a partial ride if not full.
Like the guy said above it’s all about what you do with the degree.
If he really wants to be an engineer buy him a broken down Mini Bike off Craigslist and have him tear it down to the last bolt--rebuild it and put it back together.
Most new engineers these days lack Mini Bike skills they are too busy playing computer games.

If only this were true...

What did the other kid do that he got accepted? If you know that the kids grades weren't as good, you should know the positive to why he got in?
Was he applying to another school at UF, not Engineering?

N2theblue 02-11-2019 10:58 AM

Is your son's friend also going to engineering school at UF? Engineering departments tend to have higher admissions standards than other departments.

  1. Effective with the Fall 2018 entering class, the university will require the following minimum scores on the redesigned SAT: SAT Reading = 24, Writing and Language = 25, and Math = 24.
  2. On the ACT, a minimum score of 19 on the Reading section and 19 on the Math section.

Your son's scores do not appear to meet minimums, on the ACT at least.

Not necessarily true in engineering. Experience is more important than what school is on your resume. School helps with networking though.

Also don't go into engineering unless he really loves engineering and math. If I could do it again I would not have done engineering.

Keep his grades up and transfer over if it's that important.

We know a HS girl in the same situation. Top of her class. GPA.ACT/volunteer/etc. On paper she's impossible to overlook. She had her heart set on UF and didn't make it. There were several nearly Ivy league NE schools that accepted her but UF didn't....go figure. FSU was her backup FL school and she was accepted there too. She doesn't want to go back up to the Cold for college but might be headed that way.

The kid is doing well in school. I am sure he won't be digging ditches. Lighten up Francis.

while you may be digging his ditches, he surely won't be digging yours - or any else's by the sounds of it...

I guess we're supposed to infer that he did not get in to UF? You don't actually say that in your post.

UCF, Univ. of South Forida and Florida State are all fine engineering schools as well.

when i hire someone, i really dont care what school they went too! i care about their personality, behavior and how they perform! you can go to the best school in the world and not be able to do your job, or you could barely pass the shitteist school and be the best in your field! i see it on a daily basis.

possible, how ever i have not witnessed it. i think people feel they need that to get their foot in the door. in reality a good interview, a good work ethic, and proving yourself can be just as effective!
