I'm not saying that will be their final opinion, just their first impression. Like listening to the radio and hearing a song for the first time, hence, face value.
If it peaks their interest to the point they may want to find out more about the artist, that's great too. Art history is wide and vast.

I found the Louvre, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, European cathedrals, churches and other historic places very interesting.

.
so how do you feel about something like guernica? if you inherently dislike cubism / picasso then it's not worth your time? but informed by its historical relevance, it's one of the most important works of art in the twentieth century.

i'm not saying "this is america" is a picasso-like masterpiece, but one of the purposes of art throughout history has been to bring attention to important / controversial topics. in doing so, artists hope that awareness lead to education. we've got a thread here on THT now discussing this song and amazingly it hasnt ended up in the bilge. i consider that a win, even though there is plenty of disagreement about its artist merit...which is completely OK and expected from any form of art.

After forcing myself to watch the entire video and reading the Wikipedia page to understand WTF is going on and how the hell this could be song of the year I get it now. Maybe video of the year but song of the year Iím not buying as there is not a whole lot of musical value here and you need to watch the video to understand it as the lyrics are lacking in their ability to communicate the message.

The choir being gunned down is a reference to the Charleston, SC church shooting. The cars in the video with the drivers side doors opened and lights flashing were the same makes/models that involved African American police shootings. I get the get the message and meaning but Iím not sure if I would consider this music.

To me itís kinda the lyrical equivalent of splashing some paint on a canvas then having an art showing in grewench village where all of the intellectuals discuss the meaning of the paint splatters.

interestingly enough, if you listen to the rest of childish gambino's discography, you'll hear a lot of stuff that sounds like classic R&B and disco. he's not just a rapper.

I donít see any tolerance and acceptance from the demographic that would consider this a good song.
