magnet fishing

Its getting very popular around the world. Lots of stars on U Tube. I have a magnet I use when I drop a tool while working on my boat on the lift. All my neighbours borrow it when they drop something. But Im gona order a serious "brute" magnet with 800 pounds lift force.

You should see some of the views these guys are getting on youtube. Crazy the crap they bring up. It's not for me but certainly is interesting.

I bought 2 magnets and tried magnet fishing at local boat ramps. I brought up some.....worthless crap! Various hooks, a rusted metal stringer, part of a trailer fender, various chunks of metal.....nothing but junk. I walked down a fishing pier both sides and brought up an old lawn chair, a gun barrel, a rusty knife, some bolts.....just more junk. This pier is heavily used so I expected to find a lot of stuff but that wasn't the case.

A couple of the problems with these magnets.....they bring up a ton of granular metal pieces that are a pain to clean off of the magnet and make a mess, when you connect with a dense piece of metal it can be really hard to get the magnet off of it. A couple of times the magnet attached to part of the pier underwater and I had a hard time trying to get it off without taking a header off of the other side of the dock.

Out of 4 magnet fishing trips I netted......not a dang thing! Maybe I'm not going to the right places to magnet hunt?

Uncas 02-10-2019 10:51 AM

The feds will be after you for having unregistered handguns and machine guns....

mojohalibut 02-10-2019 11:31 AM

Cover the magnet in thin plastic or place it in a bag, keeps the magnet clean

those guns may be interesting finds, but are usless pieces of junk

What you need to find a gold magnet

I don't care about finding guns, they are just worthless junk to me. I was more curious about what I could find, if I happened to find anything of value that would just be a bonus.

williamwallus 02-10-2019 12:38 PM

found a bunch of old guns and junk... trip to the garbage can...

not for me

SEATOAD 02-10-2019 12:41 PM

It works to keep kids occupied for a while but other than that its kind of pointless.

I have a smaller 330 lb pull strength magnet that I just received on Friday. I am anxious to try it out on the 13,000 acre lake I normally fish. It was flooded in 1972 for a nuclear power plant and I am thinking there might be some interesting things down there. If anything good comes up, I might get a higher strength magnet.

C3D 02-10-2019 01:18 PM

I think if you can go magnet fishing in an Eastern European bog near Kursk, it will be cool (if you don't blow yourself up).

Here is the US - not so much.

We need pictures. You will need ten posts on here before you can post pics.

A dude near Ocala magnet fished an old pineapple grenade out the Ocklawaha a couple of weeks ago.

Magnet Fishing

Nothing like the satisfying clunk when you realize your 800 lb magnet just attached itself to the floor of your car. Make sure anyone with a pacemaker stay clear of it.

chasvb1 02-10-2019 04:00 PM

Can this improve my steelhead fishing?

This is bears repeating. Keep away from pacemakers or any other ICDís.

My son and I ordered one and used it quite a few times. Found rusty iron-containing metal objects. Never really found anything cool. When I helped my buddy put his motor on while the boat was in the river, we dropped a couple of tools and bolts. It worked great for retrieving them.

My wife and I have been magnet fishing with the grandkids for 2 years now. Haven’t found anything worth a whole lot yet, but it’s been fun.

I used to do this in the local party cove. Found numerous anchors I sold on Craigslist.

In all seriousness it is a fun hobby to take part in. The magnets are really, really powerful and can present a serious trapping injury so if anyone does give it a go be careful of your magnet!

LI Sound Grunt 02-11-2019 03:36 AM

There is so much Mercury and other heavy metals in migratory fish - they use magnets to catch Stripers and Bluefish around here ;-)

Sounds like it could be fun. Donít take the gang around here seriously. They just donít realize how close their hobby is to yours. They will get up before the crack of dawn, load their $100k++ boat with $2k++ worth of fishing gear and head to the marina where they will put in $150++ worth of fuel. They will then run 1hr++ to get to the fishing grounds to troll. Somedays they come home after catching 3 bonita that were thrown back. Somedays, they catch something valuable. Doesnít seem like a whole lot different except the starting costs...

haha I have thick skin, I am a magnet fisherman, metal detectorist and normal fisherman. I have had so much stick and rub pulling over the years that it just bounces of now a days ;)

And thats where it shines . Kids can handle a smaller magnet and they have a ball. Gets em out of the house and gets them off the video games.

When I was a kid, about 12 years old, I was changing the spark plug on our outboard motor. I dropped my Dad's shiny new Craftsman spark plug socket into the canal. My friend had a "100 pound" magnet from Edmund Scientific. We tied a string to it and tried to get the socket back before Dad came home. It was too cold to go into the water, which was about 10 feet deep. After about 20 minutes, I finally felt the wrench pick up something. Lo and behold! There was a 3-pound catfish sticking to the magnet! Turns-out the fish had swallowed the socket! True story, well maybe.

perfect thread. went down to check the ice eaters yesterday, and brought down a rod with one of my oldest mepps spinner. The one I actually keep hanging on a hook in my garage cause O like how it looks. Dropped it off the dock like a moron.

Ran home and got this $5 magnet I bought at harbor freight. The spinner is back on my pegboard where it belongs.

I think it sounds fun.
