Default Help w/ new stairs paint.

Replaced old rug covered pine stair treads and risers w/ new routed and sanded poplar replacements. Not thinking I gave them 3 coats of premium quality Behr white latex. After 3 months of wear it seems I made the wrong choice and should have went w/ enamel as the treads still seem to get tacky when wet and grains of sand and grit dig in to the 3 layers. I will be installing tread covers, but I am asking if I should repaint treads w/enamel over the latex? ( picture for representation )

No. Never oil over latex. Latex over oil is fine and preferred in some or most apps. Always prime wood with oil interior and exterior. then top coat with either.

With the performance Latex coatings available, I dont think you need to go to an oil, but I would call your local Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore for recommendations. Behr is not the best choice for stairs....

As the treads are already painted, the suggestion is to re-coat with a tougher latex?

I recently did the same...primed with zinsser shellac primer and then a latex paint ....not very durable ...I think im going to re paint and coat with minwax Satin Polycrylic... Its a real hard gloss finish and I think with be more durable....

Will you apply over latex?
