Embarrassing, but I learned just a few years ago that interstate exit numbers reflect mileage/distance... so Exit 121 is 21 miles from Exit 100.

The numbers increase as you go north or east on highways with 1 or 2 digits. Ex. I-95, Hwy 1
Along this same line, even numbered highways run east/west and odd numbered highways run north/south.

I haven't looked it up but I think the 121 (and each marker) is miles to the next city... I think the city's main post office or some specific point in each city.

Not in Florida. Here, exit numbers are mile markers for the road.

You are correct, I had heard this years ago and it made sense on the interstate I traveled on back then but had never looked it up to confirm. In fact it was looooong before algore invented the internet for an easy search.
