Default Lumber quality comparison

Hi there, just looking for a professional opinion on whether the lumber quality is better from Lowe's / Home Depot or 84 Lumber. Thanks!

I don't buy lumber from any of them unless it's a rush.

Agreed. With above poster.

What part art of country are you in?? Usually a smaller local hardware store is way lower in price and it’s american lumber your buying.

I'm no professional, but my answer would have to be no.

Good luck, I find that unless you go to a hi end premium lumber supplier that is way more expensive, the small guys buy lumber from the same place the big guys do, they just buy less of it. It all sucks. It has sucked my entire life of 35 years old and I have heard the entire time "lumber now days is terrible" I often wonder if that has been said for the last 100 years.

I guess it's the same all over the world, you want it in a rush, or don't mind if it's really only suitable for the fire, go to a big chain store, you want "proper" suitable materials, go to a specialist place.

Thanks so much for all the advice! We do have a few small lumber stores around here, I'll check them out.

The lumber yard I use for most projects mills their own lumber and you can get any quality you're willing to pay for. What you normally find at big box stores is barely 2 before it gets picked through.

I noticed a big improvement in my nearest Home Depot after a Lowe's opened 2 miles away. But, they are slipping again.

I bought 2 sheets of plywood for some shelving last night from Home Depot. I walked past what was left of the 2 x 4s and there was one in the shape of a "U" there, hanging on the rack. Not shaped the way you think it would be, but if you were looking at the 4" side, that part was curved, if that makes sense

They both suck, but Lowes in our area does carry nicer wood for finishing or cabinet making... Their maple selection is nearly "good" if you don't mind rolling each piece on the floor to find the straight ones.

Are you building a boat?

Just picked up a load of common pine yesterday. Drove right by Lowe’s and HD to our local lumber yard. Their common pine is as good as box stores so called d-select. And at 3/4 the price

Depending on what your project is and how much you need, Both lowes and Home Depot (depending on the market you are in) have commercial sales. If you specify #2 spf, the lumber that is delivered on the truck is much better than what is on the shelf at the retail store. Much of what is on the shelf is Grade #3 or not gradable. Buying buy the bunk is the best way to get quality lumber.

They all suck. Lumber is a commodity.

I’ve received entire bundles of 2x12’s where 40% had cracks 1-2’ long at the ends from our premium lumber yard I pay more for since they deliver next day.
Even on some of my precut 2x4x104 5/8 I order are really bad.

Lowes around here is the worst.

HD isn’t bad. The problem is unless it’s a new bundle, what’s sitting on the floor is the left overs of the last 5 bundles people picked through.

In S.E. Pa. we have 3-4 good lumber yards, maybe a few other good small ones. My Buddy gets all of his lumber from a yard in Lancaster as long as the load is more $2,500.
He claims it is only 5% more for premium lumber, pays for itself on every load.

84 lumber for me, a lot bigger inventory and better quality than HD or Lowe's.
