We just spent a weekend in Philly this past fall. My in laws grew up in north Philly in the 40s-60s so we had a my FIL as a tour guide. We stayed right by City Hall and could walk to most everything. I was expecting filth and was totally in surprised that I really enjoyed myself. You can make a day from the City Hall area by visiting all the touristy stuff as there is a lot of history there. Reading Terminal Market was my favorite spot. Know that you are going to a big city and keep moving. Plenty of reviews on line as well as what to see.

I have to ask why you would choose Philly if your tickets are good for anywhere in the US ?? Not going to bash philly , just curious ... I could literally think of 50 other destinations that would appeal to me . Now if I was making a list of cities I DONT want to visit .......

Cool things to see and do:
Reading Terminal Market
Penns Landing
Philly Art Museum
Liberty Bell
Independence Hall
Mutter Museum
Independence Sea Port Museum
Cruiser Olympia
Submarine Becuna
Elfreths Alley (Old Residential street in nation)
Watch the movie National Treasure - then go check out some of the places the show in the movie.
South Street
Barcade (Bar with tons of arcade games, PacMan, Tron, Pinball etc)
Franklin Institute
Urban Axe (Axe Throwing, like playing darts BYOB)
Eastern State Penitentiary
City Hall
Spruce Street Harbor Park
Philadelphia Zoo

Food
Reading Terminal Market (Yes on list of things to do, but a ton of great places to eat there as well)
Pat or Gino's Steaks (Even though I prefer Jimmie's Steaks on South Street)
Las Bugambilias (Mexican)
Cuba Libre
Apricot Stone (Armenian BYOB)
Fette Sau (BBQ)
Jack's Fire House
Dinic's (Best Roast Pork Sandwiches - Reading Terminal Market)
El Vez

Drinks
Philadelphia Distilling Company
R&D Bar
Assembly Rooftop Lounge ( Awesome view of Logan Sq down the Parkway to the Art Museum)
Goose Island Brewery
Federal Distilling Company

And that is just a sample of great places to go, eat and drink. Let me know what type of things you like to do and I can refine the list. I live on my boat in Philly from November to April, let me know if you want any more information, I will be glad to help. If you stay in the Hilton Penn's Landing or that area everything I listed is either walking distance or a short Uber ride away. No need for a car!

Scott
There actually isn't a bad part of my town.

Philly sucks.

Haha this was my thought. Pretty much a dump of a city relative to other great places in the US.

Honestly not trying to be overly negative as I mentioned earlier I lived there and and friends there still

Plenty to do in Philly (as mentioned above). But, you are also within 100 miles of a multitude of destinations. My Recommendation? Stay outside the city and rent a car.

Went with my wife about 10 years ago for a weekend. We took one of those silly sight seer busses around, got a lot of information/history stuff. We bought a two day pass though which let us get on and off where ever we wanted. SUPER easy, especially not worrying about taxis, parking etc.
Assume its still the same based on other responses, but there were a lot of homeless etc. Some were A-holes, others were not.

I couldn't convince my wife to do the prison tour, though we walked by it.

I am a history buff and really enjoyed touring the Olympia. Kind of a little known part of Philly. That was Dewey's flag ship during the battle of Manila Bay.

I went on a first date there too, but during their Halloween event! She got nice and "close" during and after the tour.
