At least he didn't try and stuff the raw meat in the bag with your deli meats and cheese.

No worse than smokers that take too many smoke breaks leaving their more healthy and intelligent coworkers to pick up their slack.

He then began scanning the remainder of my groceries. I didn't grasp the concept at first, but it became clear when he left the pork ribs til the end. He then made her come back to the scanner and handle the ribs all the way to the bag. I wasn't/am still not sure what to think about all of this. It doesn't bother me at all, but I wonder if it gets annoying to coworkers who have to go through extra steps due to his religious beliefs. Pork in any form has to be a pretty common item among shoppers; and this must happen several times per hour. What says THT?
Not Jewish shoppers.

But I will say that it seems that almost everyone who follows their choice of religion select tenets that are convenient to them.

This came up on another forum but now I can't find it for a link.
A Muslim employee asked his religious leader about this and the opinion was he was just an employee
and didn't own the store, he wasn't the seller and just an employee, plus , the majority of the merchandise sold
there was all right for Muslims to sell and touch. Also it was in the West which was a factor.
Not like he was working in a pork only butcher shop.
Maybe the guy in the OP is a fanatic.

Someone I knew had the government contract to make prosthesis for the Iraq people after the Iraq war. The part where you stick your limb was lined with pig skin and stamped with Made In The USA. He said there were thousands of Muslims walking around in these prosthesis not knowing they were lined with pig skin.

And like most religious do's and don'ts, I'm sure their existence in an afterlife was the same either way...

What's strange is that the bagger in the story picked up the pork to look at it then dropped it. If he already picked it up, why not just put it in a bag? He then switches places with the girl who is ringing up the groceries? Wouldn't he need to touch the pork to ring it up?

If your job description says that you have to bag groceries you should bag all the groceries. It's just that simple. Don't take the job (or offer the job) if they can't perform essential functions.

Either this story isn't true or the bagger has store management hoodwinked and they are playing into his perceived religious beliefs. If he's a good Muslim, he wouldn't work in a store that sold pork products at all....

So not at all? As stated in the OP, it didn't bother me. It was just a head scratcher on multiple levels.

I'll never really understand how people can be so controlled by their religion...just don't get it.

Lots of truth.
However, many less religions insist everyone not in their religion pay a tax to exist (Jizya). Many less religions want to abolish other entire religions/refuse to acknowledge other people the right to exist. Many less religions are still living as if it is the 8th Century. Many less religions have a concept called jihad. Not many religions ban ones right to live if you happen to leave that particular religion.
etc. etc. etc.
Flame away.
