Default Bridge crossing

For you folks in the sunny south that traverse the Sunshine Skyway bridge I thought you might get a bang out our bridge up here in Michigan with the weather we have coming in today.
Its open yet but an escort is required for anything taller than a car or pickup.

And that’s why I love South Louisiana. The worst thing we have to watch for is pelicans aiming for our windshields.

No thank you. That bridge literally scares me.

Are you going across it today?

Nope. Staying as close as possible to home today with all the crap the weather man is talking about moving through.
Snow turning to sleet turning to rain and then back to snow. Just plain ugly winter weather.
On the bright side though...if it's warm enough to rain that means we're 20-25* above normal temps for this time of year.

what good does and escort do when crossing the bridge?
report to someone you fell off of it, if you do?
or maybe take pics of you going over the side and show their buddies?

Speed mainly. Plus they are in constant communication with monitors spitting out wind/weather conditions ahead.
The bridge is 5 miles long.

they mark the spot where you go over so they can float the memorial wreath there in the spring after ice out.

The grid that that is the road surface can make it feel like the tires have gone all squirrely and that the car wants to change lanes all by itself. Throw in a good 30 mph wind and sometimes it does.

I have been the last one across before it was closed.

Also have spent quality time sleeping in my car waiting for it to open.
Went to college in the Sault.

↑ ↑ ↑ ---- Last Winter I got hosed 4 times alone.... Good times scrambling to get a place to sleep. I was smart one of the times last year and left my Snowmobile trailer the weekend before. I stopped off at Indian River to make hotel arrangements when the bar tender told me and a buddy that we could fly out of Pelston to get across.. We were in the air within and hour and had some friends pick us up at Kinross. I don't recommend them smaller planes though. Will probably never do that again.

I will say though, crossing it when they have a no trailer / rv wind advisory is not for the weak.. I was doing the 25mph at about midnight and the only one on the bridge with a death grip on the wheel.

Lived in Escanaba for years. Driven the Mac in all weather and it never really bothered me at all. I used to take over for Dad though; he just hated it. I've driven it in weather like that and seen the expansion joints wide open.
