I have a phantom 3 standard by DJI. It’s incredibly easy to fly and you can pick them up cheap right now.

Bought FIL a DJI spark controller kit for $359. Looks like you can control it with your hands etc, for selfies. We'll have a review Dec 26th after it gets stuck in the trees I'm sure.

How "into it" is your son? They can range from simple hobby shop toys with cameras to expensive tools used for aerial photography. There is a wide range of options, bit it would be helpful to know how dedicated he is/would be.

How old is your son and what does he want to do,with it? I have a dji Phantom 3 and if I at 68 years old with little gaming skills can fly it any young person can do it.

I bought a Parrot Bebop 2 power last year for myself for Christmas. They can be had for 3-400. Picked this over the DJI spark for battery life and overall size to see at a distance. Battery will last 20-25 minutes. Decent camera. Easy to fly, eslecespec in video mode which keeps it slower. I can get a several hundred yard range with my phone only controlling and it will go a mile us with the remote. That being said if money is no object get The DJI Mavic Pro.

Mavic Pro.

Spark is nice but the flight time is not long enough.

Another vote for the Mavic Pro....I've flown a few (and also flew a lot of R/C planes and helis throughout much of my life). I used a Mavic Pro for work doing outdoor surveys for some larger outdoor wireless network projects.

Amazing what they can do!
DJI has the market share for a reason.

DJI. You can get into a Phantom 3 kit for less than $600. I have a 4 with the FPV goggles. You can find a refurbished 3 or 4 for quite a bit less. Dunno anything about the Mavic, but based on the Phantom 4 I have, it seems to be a great deal.

I got a Phantom 3 a couple years ago and it has been great. It is super easy to fly, good flight time and nice video quality. However, I found that I don't use it all that much because it is bulky and depending on the case you have, you need to put on the blades. I ordered the DJI Spark for my wife to give me for xmas this year.
I typically just want to get a few minutes of footage around my campsite or on the boat at the sandbar so the short flight time should be okay and the small size will allow me to bring it more often.

Best intro drone for the price, hands down. Next would be the Spark, but it costs a lot more.
