Default MarineMax “accidentally” overcharging for service

Had some warranty work and routine maintenance done recently by MarineMax. They charged my credit card on file. When I carefully looked at the invoice, I noticed multiple overcharges and a couple of items charged twice. For example they charged an “environmental fee” twice. They charged for “freight” but nothing needed to be shipped for my work.

When I spoke to the gentleman at the service desk he commented (offhand) that these overcharges were not uncommon. It amounted to $100 on a $3000 bill which could have gone unnoticed. I bet this happens a lot.

Has anyone else experienced this?

It's not just boats, I got an estimate to repair some minor damage to the front of my Chrysler 300 and here are some of the additional charges. Basically the front fascia is cracked and the paint damage is on the fascia that is going to be replaced. These charges are nothing but a bullshit way to extort more money from you! I was so pissed off when I saw these stupid fake charges that I just smiled and walked away.

8 # Subl HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL 1- 15.00 T
9 # Repl CAR COVER 1- 25.00 T
10 # Repl CORROSION PROTECTION 1- 55.00 T
11 # Repl FLEX ADDITIVE 1- 19.00 T
12 # Subl SHOP MATERIALS TAPE MASK PAPER ETC 1- 34.00 T

I want someone to tell me why I should pay an extra $15 for hazardous waste disposal?
Pay $25 for Repl car cover.....I don't have a car cover so WTF is this for?
Pay $55 for Repl corrosion protection.....on what? The fascia if fiberglass what corrosion protection is necessary?
Pay $19 for flex additive....really? WTF is flex additive?
Pay $34 for shop materials? Where did they come up with this amount?

I work as an insurance adjuster and see some outrageous estimates from contractors. There was one where there was was painting on the fascia and soffit. The contractor added $1000 for ladder rental. 1 - if your paint contractor doesn't have ladders, he isn't much of a contractor. 2 - if someone needs ladders and doesn't have them, it would be a bit cheaper to buy. His estimate was full of crap like that.

Whenever you paint the plastic on cars you need to use flex in the paint so you don't get spider-webbing cracks in the paint. Not that there isn't some bullshit charges on there.

I went to Palm City/Stuart Marine Max to get a new Mercury outboard. Deal was going good until I mentioned my boat was a 2002. Boat is in excellent condition, but the service manager said they don’t install engines on boats that old.

I then went across the street to River Watch for a new Mercury and they wanted to sell me a Evinrude G2.

Nine Mercury dealers later and after many long stories and excuses I walked into Eden Marine at Pirates Cove. Met with the owner Greg Eden, made a deal on a 2018 200 hp four stroke, sold my 150 Yamaha on the spot, complete deal took less than an hour, and within a few days I was back on the water. Great place to do business with.

Additional fees are the new way to keep your hourly rate down, or the base fee.

Just look at Hotels and airlines. I have seen this at many marinas now, the per foot might be reasonable, but the add on fees are getting ridiculous.

get what your saying regarding BS "fees"

On the other hand have a hard time disposing of certain solvents since I am not sure where they will wind up and have a bunch of used solvents from projects done in the past sitting in old glass pickle jars and the like.

Just don't feel good about heave hoeing those jars in the trash. What to do with em..............

So for fees regarding proper disposal I am good if they really are disposing of them properly.

Very common.

I'd write more, but I have to go clean my tools and be thankful I know how to use them.

Was Outboards only one, and Coastal Marine another, I know both of these guys well, just asking!
Good job on finding what you were looking for.

Its not difficult... a shop should have a hazardous waste container... when it gets near full, they call to have it emptied out.
