Default Paid for an item, went to get my truck and they sold it to someone else

I was at Lowes with my wife to look for a vanity for the house we just purchased, we found the right one and it was on close out, $469 marked down to $107

Took it to the front counter and paid for it, they put my name on it with copy of the receipt that said paid so I could go get my truck. I come back and don't see it, I ask and it turns out they sold it to someone else. The person I was working with now even recognized my name and said she saw it sitting there on the cart with my info on it.

All they could say was "sorry for the mix up, we can return your money". I don't want to be an ass, but they don't have anything similar in the store until you get into the $400+ range. I paid for and purchased a much higher quality product and they made a mistake and sold it, to replace it will cost me an additional $350 out of my pocket.

What are they responsible for?

How did you let it out of your sight so long someone else took it. I mean did you stop by the lunch wagon?

Man, that stinks. For sure get the manager involved. They can figure out what happened from the video if they want to. Maybe an inside job in that an employee had their eye on it or someone else rolled it out since it was "paid" . I don't think I would have left it alone if my wife could have watched it. Sorry man, hope it works out.

Next time if you leave a paid for $500 item unattended, remove the price tag, grab a sharpy, and mark it $1950.00

I agree someone did not buy it after you did they just rolled it out the door.
make them look at the tapes to see who did it

I am guessing you took way to long. Sucks though. Maybe another location has one. They should be able to check. Or possibly only ship to store.

Question

Do you also leave your car running when you go into a deli to get lunch??

So as I'm walking out of Lowes, I scored this great vanity that some dude just left there by the door.
Receipt was marked paid and it was just sitting there so I loaded it up and off I went.
Doesn't really fit my bathroom so I need to cut it down but what the hell, I got it for free.

Going back every weekend to see if I can score some kitchen cabinets, a bbq grill or some patio furniture.
Some new appliances would be awesome too.

Actually, once you bought it, it's yours. You left it unattended. Lowe's has no dog in the hunt UNLESS they, in fact sold it again. That would muddy the water somewhat, but it's still your obligation - not theirs - to take care of your property. It's easy enough for them to look back on their sales record to see if they sold it again within your time frame.

Where was your wife when the vanity disappeared?

I would ask to see if someone walked away with it. They may not have sold it. Lowes is corporate and if they sold it, demand another one. Lowes pro services was miserable for a friend of mine an after running it up the chain, I think they damn near remodeled her bathroom for like 500 bucks. They will do all kinds of things to avoid bad PR.

They didn't resell it, someone walked that right out for free.

It wasn't sold again, except maybe on craigslist. It grew legs while you were getting your truck.

If someone stole something that I had paid for, left unattended and the store would refund me, I would consider that store pretty awesome.
if you paid with a credit card, you may also have recourse through them, or at least used to.

Since they admitted that they sold it to someone else I'd hold their feet to the fire and get the same or similar vanity for what you already paid.

They have a holding area for items sold.

And yes it was re-sold, they can track the item number and the person I worked with confirmed it, so did the cashier that re-sold it and the person that helped them load it.

There was no question about what happened.

if someone had just walked off with it I would have stated that was the case in the first post. I stayed for more than an hour and investigated every bit of what took place.

Everyone involved was talked with to confirm exactly what happened, the person I worked with did an excellent job of going through each detail.
