Default Longmire

Started watching it on Netflix. I like the characters, but it has a corny Mayberry meets Perry Mason feel about it (They always get the confession). They sure have a lot of murders in a small Wyoming town; probably enough to keep up with Chicago... But I guess they need to keep us interested somehow as it would be a boring show if they just did episodes about setting up speed traps just outside of town for out-of-staters.

Their crime scene handling is atrocious. The lead character never wears gloves and touches artifacts and there is never any chain of custody. I'm surprised if they can ever get a conviction. They also take a lot of "Hollywood cop-show literary latitude" with the gun posturing (pointing guns at each other and telling each other to "drop it") and it's always OK for Cops to break the law to collect evidence in the name of getting the bad guy.

Even though all that bugs the crap out of me, I still find myself liking the lead characters and continue to watch (and even though Vic isn't really my type, I'd smash her).

Yep - Harlan County, KY is the only county in the US with a higher murder rate than Absaroka county, WY.

Longmire doesn't need a conviction, he always gets a confession!

Two seasons were enough for me...

Unsurprisingly, the books (while not great literature by any stretch) are significantly better than the show ...

I liked it, although it's not a genre that I typically watch. I liked how he carries a 1911, and in a crisis he grabs a 30-30 lever action. There was no super weapons or super-human strength. Just a sheriff that could be someone's dad.

And Vic - I remember her from one of the pitch black Vin Diesel movies.

It is definitely not a police/crime procedural show. Try Bosch or Laws and Order.

Longmire is a just for fun light modern Western / Soap Opera Good Guy Bad Guy Cowboys and Indians saga with like you said great characters, scenery and most of all Katie Longmore! Just go with the flow .....

I unexpectedly liked it - last season or 2 did start getting old though. Didn't he retire finally in the last episode?

It gets better as you go.

I really enjoyed the beauty of the land.

As for how much crime there is, it get's explained later on....the county he serves is the size of Rhode Island or something like that...they say it toward the end.

Funny this came up. We just started Season 1 three days ago, have just now finished Episode 3.

This is the dumbest, most poorly written show ever. Makes The Bridge, Justified, Hell on Wheels seem like great television by comparison. Seems like all they do is gather up behind some crappy cover, have a shootout, and then Longmire talks the bad guy out of his crime. We decided tonight to pull the plug. I think F Troop was a better western drama.
