Default !#@%^*# Printers!

Everyone who has ever worked on printers...in any capacity...hit yourself. Why these pieces of crap never work is beyond me.

So there I were tonight, sitting on the back porch enjoying some Blanton's after fixing some epic fajitas on our newly-purchased Blackstone griddle (yeah...I caved and got the 22" version. Freaking amazing, but that's for a different thread).

Anyway, so there I am pontificating about nothing in particular, looking forward to taking our boat out tomorrow for the first time in over a year (that joker was NASTY, but it did fire right up thankfully).

At any rate, I was on the back porch enjoying the tiki torches, party lights, and the plott hound digging some new holes in the yard when the spousal unit comes outside and says she needs to scan some homework in. what the? It's freaking 11:00 at night...and I don't mess with freaking printers when I'm pontificating. Well that was a nonstarter so into the office I go. Should be simple enough, right? You've got here a relatively new scanner/printer/copier jobbie, some crisp sheets of paper, and an automatic document feeder which, far as I can tell, is in fine working order. Ok...scan! No dice. Paper jam. Paper jam? The sumbitch didn't even TRY to grab the paper! Try again. Scans the fisrt page, then the second. Phew. All good. Back to pontificating. Oh no, apparently they were all front and back. WHO DOES THAT!?!?!? Ok, go to scan again. Paper jam. I start throwing a hissy fit while scenes from office space flash through my head. How satisfying it would be to slam this piece of crap on the driveway. Wife can tell I'm getting pissed. I say something about not waiting until 11:00 during my Saturday pontificating time to decide to scan some papers in. She knows I hate dealing with printers. She responds...something about watching the kid all day and not having time to do homework until after dinner. Wisely, I backed down from this one, admitting defeat.

A man's gotta know his limitations.

She ended up taking pictures of each page, and I guess it worked. But seriously though...all the advances in technology and we can't make a !*%@^(!# printer that just WORKS!?!?!? We've put a man on the moon, for God's sakes! I mean, if you choose to believe that sort of thing...

Rant over.

(but seriously though if you've ever been on a design team for a printer, hit yourself repeatedly).

In my experience Brother printers just plain work. If you are using something else, through it out and get a Brother.

(I have no affiliation with Brother, just personal experience that suggests they are orders of magnitude more reliable than other printers.)

Good to know. Ours is an Epson, less than two years old and seen very light use. Really no excuse for it to not work.

I've found that Epsons are worse than average. I *HATE* dealing with Epson printers. I don't understand how they are still in business.

Again, I have no affiliation with Brother, or Epson, or any other printer manufacturer.

I am pretty good at getting stuff such as printers to work but I met my match with the HP printer I have. It worked perfectly for 5+ years and then it started going into an "error status", I was able to re-establish the connection by turning everything off and then restarting. This worked for about a month and then my fix didn't work any longer. I hired a computer guy to come over and see what the problem was and he spent the first hour doing everything that I had already tried. Ended up going onto a HP forum and found a setting in the printer set up that needed to be changed and POOFFF everything worked again! Lasted 2 weeks and now nothing will print again, I did everything I could think of to try and the computer guy tried to fix the settings remotely and nothing he did worked. Now the f'in printer is always in an error state and doesn't print anything. No explanation why it's in error state and nothing worked while trying to fix it. All of the settings are what they should be and it simply won't print. I will take this printer outside and beat the hell out of it when I get a new one. I am going to video it too!

I have a brother scanner that is very good. I no longer mess with the printer scanner. If your spousal unit requires things to be scanned often, then protect the pontificating time and get one. $150 or so, doesn't take up much space and so easy to use that even a spousal unit can do it.

I've been through a few printers over the years. Brother, Cannon, Epsom . The Cannnon I could never get to connect via WIFI. Currently using the Epsom which gets a little fussy once in a while. Always seems to happen at the least convenient times. Heaven forbid print anything in color and have to buy replacement cartridges.

Brother is not a guaranteed solution, FYI. I have had a ~$1000 brother printer for the last 7 years. When it works, it’s awesome! Then it has a stupid low toner setting that you need to manually reset to use the last half of the cartridge. It doesn’t scan through Microsoft’s scanner app, I have to use the brother app. And lately it is printing at 3-5 minutes per page (yes) then I print 30 page documents.

i agree with the OP - if you have ever worked on a printer design team:
1- raise your hand
2- ball it in a fist
3- punch yourself in the nose

I have 2 Brother printers and one is 18 years old. It's quite a bit slower then newer ones but it just works. We've tried HP, Canon and Epson. The Canon and Epsom went into the trash as did the older HP's, but we have a newer HP that is about3 years old and is working great,

i had an Epson dot matrix printer freshman year in college. 3am i’m trying to get a English paper(God I hated English) to print for a 8am class. After two hours I gave up and threw it down the hallway.

Its been two decades and the only printer I will own is HP.

i ripped my last printer off its shelf and smashed it on the ground outside my office door. I'm not an angry guy, it was more a F you To the printer than an out of control anger thing.

Calmly drove to staples and told the guy money was no object, I needed a wifi 3 in 1 that worked consistently every time. He sold me a cheap black and white brother. I print a lot and go throug two XL cartridges a year maybe, $60 on Amazon.

Ill never go back to anything else.

sidenote: NCSU my spousal unit puts off all her chores til around 9:00 too. I kill myself getting all my stuff done before I cook dinner, then she tries to bring down my one hour of the day to relax by running around huffing and fussing when it's time to wind down and go to bed.

basic problem is that they are too hard to set up, especially for wifi.
and download drivers.
maybe there needs to be a standard printer driver installed on all computers???

We have 3 in our office, none of them work right. One I have been fighting with for years, well it was time for its retirement. I took it out back, set it in the dumpster, cranked up the backhoe and proceeded to smash it into a million pieces.why? Because when I was talking to the printer one day, I told it this would happen.

I have a Canon wifi inkjet all-in-one printer that we've been using for 8 years. Works fine, no drama unless it goes into one of its self-clean modes. Then, wait a couple minutes.

After reading this thread, I'm afraid to replace it!

Well if nothing else I'm glad to see I'm not alone and don't need to seek anger management!

And yes my wife has a bad habit of putting things off til the last minute. I like to get it done and relax.

When we bought this printer, I had 3 requirements:

- WiFi (I will never again connect a printer to a computer...EVER)
- Must scan
- Must occasionally print good pictures.

Well it does print good pictures but I figure they are roughly a dollar apiece since the print cartridges are so expensive and don't last anytime at all. And God help you if the photo black runs out and you are trying to print a document with the regular black...nope, not gonna let you.

The wifi has been awesome though, except Microsoft's scan app doesn't work. But Google is smart enough to find the printer on our Network so no problems printing from my laptop. That I do like.

But one day, it's getting smashed.

Printers suck.
I thought the world had gone paperless. What happened while I was out fishing?

The only thing I need it to do is print NDAs so I can sign and scan them back in, and scan in my wife's homework (getting a second degree in EE online, has to show her work).

That's it, and everytime it is a whole process that should be easy.

Anybody who wants to make the world paperless should start with the bathrooms.

I’ve smashed more printers than I care to remember. Had the best luck with, and never smashed a brother laser. Never messed with their 3 in one though. All of mine have 4 separate toner cartridges, and aftermarket off amazon work great. My desk comouter is hooked up via USB to my docking station, and works wirelessly fine too.
