Question Just how awful is Spirit Airlines?

Just came on here to pose this question, perused the American Airline rant thread and here we are.... Want to take my family to see the Mouse this year and Spirit is way cheap. I've heard some bad about them but even the majors can have issues. Take a chance or stay the hell away even if it were free?

Have flown them few times. I lived. That’s a win. I equate it to a flying school bus

Jet blue has been great for similar prices.

"Your ass plus gas," is their motto for what goes on the flight. They nickel and dime you for things like picking your seat but they have just about the largest carry on size albeit a fee for that as well. I don't mind them for a couple hour flight. I mean they all basically suck but Spirit embraces the suck.

Ghetto airlines.

Made that mistake once on a last min trip.

If you have no lugage or carry on its a deal (although still ghetto af).

If you have luggage, even a carry on, you it's unlikely you'll save any money.

Spirit is just fine. Fine pilots and acft also. Save your money for your destination.

Its real simple, pay for what you need. If you bring your own drinks etc..don’t buy anything.
The legacies are using the same practices of charging for things in disguise.
Want an isle seat? Want an exit row? Want to board in a different zone? They all make you pay.

Exactly what I priced online with them. They cost just as much if not more if you have checked baggage.

Only way it makes sense is if you're by yourself with nothing to check in.

They fly at weird hours to. More night flights.

I haven't paid for anything of those things on American or Delta and they were cheap flights.

The same stuff figured into Spirt prices is actually more.

I love Spirit. I fly them twice a month. Brand new planes. Good prices. They have business class seats up front and they don’t cost that much extra. Wish they had better schedules. Never had a problem with Spirit.

It's been a good long while since I've flown, 2009 to be exact. It's seems now there's a base price and "extras" cost more. Want to bring clothes on vacation? FU pay me. Want nuts? FU pay me. Want to sit within sight of your child? FU pay me.

I can do without old chex mix, but I think sitting with family shouldn't be considered a luxury. Guess if you play, you pay.

Ditto. My fiance has used them twice in the last 6 months, R/T Houston to LAX, zero problems at a good price.

The big problem I have with flying Spirit (and other small airlines) is when there is a problem or cancelled flight your screwed because they don't have size of other airlines to have the contingency back up plans at each airport.

As an example the one time we flew Allegiant Air (another small airline), when we missed our flight the next one wasn't for 2 days! So we had to drive 3 hours to a different airport, stay in hotel overnight, buy new tickets on a new airline and miss a day of work. Likewise if you are on Spirit and something goes wrong (like a maintenance issue) it can lead to massive delays unlike a big airline where they can get another aircraft.

My new rule is...if I can't drive to my destination I don't go. I can't stand flying.

Flew them twice awhile back…. Once to FL and once to Vegas….. Yes we made it there, but damn…. Talk about feeling like a sardine for 3+hours….. Crappy way to start/end a vacation…..

Do a flight search on Kayak, +/- a few days of you intended trip... you can probably find something close in price...

Flew spirit for the first time back in April. Me, wife and 4 kids from Chicago to St.Thomas. Tickets were 330$ round trip compared to 750$ and up with other carriers. It was the only option I could afford. I bought 6 of the "carry on bags" that are the exact size per the airline regs. to fit under the seat. I told each family that everything you bring must fit in this bag, no exceptions. We checked in online 24hrs before the flight and all 6 of us sat together on both flights without up charges. They never even looked at my bags a single time. I will say because most people fly without anything but a carry on, from the time they started boarding to push off was easily within 20 minutes. Very quick! flights down we're great, brand new planes, very friendly staff.

Return flight from St Thomas got canceled, something wrong with heat or Ac. They put us up in a resort for the night so they could fly another plane down in the morning. Once they got us from St Thomas to Ft Lauderdale the next day, they put us on American Airlines to get us back home because they had no connections being it was spring break.

I would fly them again.

Fly out of Atlantic City all the time. If you go to the airport and purchase your ticket at the counter, the savings are DRAMATIC. Not many know this.............youwill save $$$$$ if you purchase at the ticket counter. Get your price online first and then go and compare......You'll buy on the spot!! That being said, they are the Greyhound of the skies. As far as a cheap azz airline at 30,000 feet.....Just remember, the space program was built going to the lowest bidder...........

My wife used spirit last year. She said it was the worst flights she has ever been on. Or you could look at the reviews that gives them a 2.5 out of 5 with nearly 8,000 reviews and a 3 out of ten with 2,300 reviews.

Or go with the statistical sample of THT.

Flying generally sucks to begin with and doubly sucks when the airline is poor.

I'll pay more from UA and at least not be scared sheetless

I fly Spirit all the time. New planes and good crew. They charge for every item but no need to pay for your seats. Just check-in right at 24 hours before your flight and they will sit your family together. Keep luggage to a minimum.
