I'm in training right now to be a cfi. Will have it in a couple months. So, take my opinion for what it is. The opinion of a guy who maybe knows, but doesn't have the certificate to prove it. My opinion is, it depends on the persons situation. If you have a lot of free time, and want to get it done quick, go with a part 61 school. If you don't, go with part 141.

looking for fixed wing advice

Looking to be a professional fixed wing pilot (IE paying the bills with your flying job) or just get your commercial rating and fly your own aircraft / rent aircraft ?

If you are looking at making a career as a professional pilot then talk to professional pilots that are in the positions you aspire to, not CFI’s. Aviation is a bit backwards in that CFI’s are usually at the low end of the experience scale in an experience driven industry.

Best way to CIME is FlightSafety. 5mo program. That’s the one I went through and can recommend. Second would be the ATP school. I know a lot of companies desperate for pilots. I know JetBlue had a pilot program as well. Go from 0 time to flying as FO for them.

Not looking to make a career out of it, but a buddy of mine is a commercial pilot around here and they are always looking for someone to fill a leg and it pays three to $500 a day, so I will be getting my privates license anyway so why not go ahead and get the commercial endorsement and take it vantage of those days when someone is needed

1. Do you have your instrument rating?
2. How much total time do you have?
3. How much Pilot in Command Cross country time do you have?

Commercial is one of the easiest ratings to get. There are just some prerequisites to meet first.

Caution, attempt at humor ahead....Your statement is kind of like when a guy comes on THT and says I catch tuna every now and then, they sell for as much as 10k at the dock, how can I do that? Of course its really not that simple. If it was everyone would just be selling tuna or sitting in the right seat of some airplane making $500 a day. You do need to speak with a CFI or even your local flight school. They should be able to set you straight.

Andy thanks for your response, to bring you up to speed I will be starting from ground zero, I do have a few hours in various aircraft but none that can be logged I’ll plan on taking a substantial time off to put forth towards training instead of doing it over the course of yearsI would be getting private, instrument and commercial. And as time permits I may try to get multi

Hey Stephen-

That helps to know. Here's the skinny on it: you need 250 hours total time for your commercial, 50 hours cross country, and some night/instrument time as well (but that generally comes along the way while you're building the 250TT). I know that does not sound like a lot, and it isn't. That is just the basic requirement to earn a commercial ticket. Keep in mind you'll need an instrument rating as well.

To fly passengers or cargo from point A to point B you have to work for a part 135 charter company. As pilot in command, that requires a minimum of 1200 hours. If you are going to be right seat, you can get in with just a commercial ticket if anyone will hire you. If you want to fly multi, expect an additional requirement of 100-200 hours of multiengine time. That is prohibitively expensive to rent.

I'll provide a road map below, and I'll also add an outside the box suggestion. Avoid big box flight schools. They are SUPER expensive. As described below, there will be periods in between training you need to build significant (and expensive) amounts of flight time. Find ways to do this without paying. For me, it was towing gliders. I couldn't get paid because i didn't have a commercial yet, but I built crazy time one summer and didn't pay a cent for it. I was instructing when I was 19 years old thanks to that!

Basic Roadmap to flying charter:
-Get your private ticket (realistically 50-60 hours)
-Build 50 hours of cross country PIC time
-Get your instrument rating (realistically 50-60 hours)
-Build 100ish hours additional to meet commercial requirements
-Get your commercial
-Get your CFI
-Teach for another 1000+ hours, and now you are in the ballpark.

I'm not at all discouraging you, just giving you a realistic idea of how to get into it. Also PMed you my email.

I went back and read the thread. I'd encourage you to buy an instrument capable Cessna 152 and find a CFI who you want to become good friends with, then go part 61. Change that to a 172 if you're over 200# or want to take family with you while you're time building for that Commercial. There will be a very fun period between about 130 and 250 hours where you just go somewhere to burn gas.

I'm sure I can offer much more advice as I learn more about your particular situation.
