Default Grass Cutting Price

I am looking to see how much others pay for grass cutting? I live in a rural area and have right at 5 acres. No edging or landscaping or fancy cutting. Just basic mowing and weedeating. I am going to be out of town and I need it cut. Not hiring a big outfit, probably a high school kid that cuts yards as a side job. He is coming to look at it and I am curious what is the expected rate. And yes, I am going to discuss it with him. I teach him Sunday School at church, so I know the boy. Just curious what others pay.

How many hours does it take you? Figure that multiplied by the hourly rate for unskilled labor (my area that's $15 up to $20/hr).

If I do all 5 acres, it takes me about 4 hours as about half of it is under hickory trees with nasty roots so I go slow down there. The rest is easy, although with some steep inclines near the house.

Is he using your equipment and fuel? Around here A guy with a cub cadet from the box store would charge 150-200$. I'd probably quote 350$ only if it's been cut in the last week. 5 acres is a big lot. My Choppers can eat 10$ an hour in gas alone.

In Southern MD - about 25 miles South of DC, I pay $75 a cutting. It's a 1.2 acre lot but on that is the house (with a large deck), the driveway and the back 30 yards of the lot is wooded.

A small locally owned company does it: Three guys, two on mowers with the other guy with a string trimmer - they are in and out in less than 20 minutes. Grass cut, trimmed with weed-whacker and driveway and walk edged. They gut the grass at about 60 mph (or so it seems).

If this kid wants $350 to ride a lawnmower for a few hours, he is delusional. As I said this is a rural area and the yard has about 15 minutes worth of weed eater work. I burn about 4 gallons of gas cutting the whole thing. I am not hiring a professional lawn service. Just a high school kid who cuts a few rural yards on the side for money.

Thats why I asked who's equipment was being used. Here in the Midwest the prices I gave you are spot on for a stranger to cut 5 acres. Now, if you have a connection to a local kid who just needs some fun money to ride around on your mower that's different. Actually, I was away this weekend and had my neighbor kid do just what you're asking. He mowed my 1 acre and did a little weed eating. Took him just under 1.5 hours worth of work using all my stuff. Takes me about an hour. He quoted me 50$ and I gave him a 10$ tip for keeping my lines straight and cleaning the equipment when he was done. Just sharing what I know, hopefully it works out fair for both of you. Take care!

$45 for 1/3 ac lot. That is a pro lawn service company.

I also pay $35 an hour for 50-60 hp tractor work. Not sure how long it would take to do it w a tractor finish mower or bush hog.

Oh and fwiw one time a kid that worked for me was gonna cut the grass at the lodge.

He didnt make one lap around the yard (2 acres) and ran over a chain (that was very obvious) and f'd up the john deere . . .

If using your equip those roots would be an area of concern for me.

If someone will pay me $500 to cut a 5 acre yard, I will gladly do it. I understand profit and all, but $500 to sit on your ass and ride in circles is silly.

$10,000.

But, I'd have a 26yo chick who was in Playboy cut the 5 acres with a push mower wearing nothing more than heels and sun screen.

you still haven't said who's equipment is being used. If it's his then you can't just pay labor. That doesn't pay for a mower.

I've done work for churches and they seem to always want a discount. I know this isn't a church but you teach there. Keep in mind this is for you and nothing in life is free including grass cutting.
