Default Paying room and board

The son eviction thread got me thinking, when you were living home, did you pay room and board or rent to your parents?

I've been working since I was 11, started paying something from every paycheck to my mom & dad when I turned 15. Once I was an adult and still at home the portion I paid went up. I was in my own business and still living at home in my 20's, (it just worked out for all involved). From the age of 22 until 27 when mom retired and I moved I paid half the rent and mom and sister paid the other half, 25% each.

Did any of you, not contribute to the household bills? If so were your parents well off? Even then I can't imagine getting a free ride, having some skin in the game counts.

I was always expected to contribute, but not monetarily. My brother and I handled virtually all of the grass cutting, and quite a bit of other work around the farm growing up. Also did quite a bit of the grass cutting at my grandparents house, which is directly across the road from my parents. During high school and college I worked, and provided the bulk of my own spending money. My folks did cover tuition and housing in college, for which I am very grateful, and plan to do the same for my children.

personally I think the whole thing is very situationally dependent. The main theme being bit a proper work ethic should be instilled rather than keeping tabs monetarily. There are situations where the financial side might come into the picture, and be appropriate. I donít however think that itís necessarily appropriate for beneficial to ask for kids to pay rent so to speak.

Yup. My parents gave me 30 days after high school before I had to start paying rent. My parents gave it all back to me once I moved out to help me with my first apartment but they never let me know that was their intention with the rent money I gave them until they gave it back.

I only paid for a few months after hs graduation.

I got out of there as soon as I had my Pops tell me he didn't care if I was paying rent, it was still his house and rules.

I reckoned I might as well have my own rules if I was paying, so I hit the road.

My kids are either full time students or paying rent....and I will pay for classes. $300/mo and it goes up each year. I don't need it and it's held to give back once they "grow up" one day.

My in-laws did that with my wife and handed her several thousand dollars when we got married. My dad said he would have too but after 2 years of college I moved back home and immediately bought a 13 acre piece of land. He later told me if I wasn't putting 50% of my pay into getting that land paid off he WOULD have charged me rent. Since I was doing something responsible with my paychecks he let it go.

3 yrs later I'm married and in my own home (mortgage, not rent).....sold the land and bought a boat!!!! LOL

It's a complicated story but the short is. I lived with my sister and a roommate from age 14-16 in SF Cal. My sister was the oldest and she is only 18 months older than me and the room mate was a girl who's mother was dieing of cancer and she couldn't take care of her. I worked almost full time from age 14 and not only paid my share of the bills but did my share of all house hold chores including cooking. We lied to schools and my sister acted as our mother with any paperwork or phone calls. Towards the end of 10th grade I moved back to SC and lived with my mother and stepfather. I still worked full time but I only paid my own bills. I moved out and got an apartment with my girl friend who was a year older than me during the middle of 12th grade. I was lying about my age and bar tending full time at night at that time. I honestly wouldn't have graduated high school if it was not for some of the teachers at Wando especially my auto shop teacher Mr Lampkin. Went to Tech school at one point but dropped out when I opened my own business at age 23.

I've lived at home a few times for 3-6 months when coming back into, or preparing to leave, the country for work. My mother never asked me to pay rent or help with bills, besides food/drink, but I took it upon myself to make sure that any and all maintenance on her property (a 4 unit by the beach) was done and done right during that time. It worked out well for both of us.

When Dad passed (I was 15), my sports days for the most part was over, I still hunted and fished...I figured since the bread winner was gone I needed to step up....went and got a job after school, turned all money other than 10 bucks over to mom (kept 10 for gas and snuff)...

Little did I know, when I graduated my Mom handed me a HEFTY check and I asked where did this come from , she said you earned it working since your Dad died.Mom I gave you that money for yours and my bills.....I did not know but Dad left Mom well off.....I ask her why Mom, why didnt you tell me, she said I saw you were becoming a man......best lesson I ever learned!

I think we've reached peak THT BS.... Paying rent in 5 the grade... Gimme me a break.

I started working around age 15 a few hours a week on and off. My money went to beer, drugs and a gas. I didn't give my parents anything and we we're very very middle to lower middle class income wise. They moved away when I was 17 or 18 and I moved in with my grandparents and didn't pay anything there either.

Maybe the beer and drugs affected you, more than you think....

Back then it was mid 70's, I worked at a gas station and a jewelry store, gave mom & dad $25 buck a week, that was about 8 hours pay then.

When I was 11 I made $1 a day selling newspapers on the corner, enough to buy a slice of pizza and a can of Coke for lunch.
