Default Memorial Day...a few images.

Memorial Day
A day on which those who died in active military service are remembered.
Memorial Day was first widely observed in May 1868. The celebration commemorated the sacrifices of the Civil War and the proclamation was made by General John A Logan. Following the proclamation, participants decorated graves of more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers.

In years since World War 1, the day has become a celebration of honor for those who died in all America’s wars, as well as those who are Veterans and current members of the US military.
In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday. The United States celebrates this holiday the last Monday of May.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

This photo speaks a million words. It was recently posted to Reddit, with a caption that reads, "His mom caught him spending time with his daddy. He lost dad (SFC Benjamin Wise) in Afghanistan on January 15." According to the website In Honor of Benjamin Wise, the father of three was critically injured on January 9, 2012, in the Balkh Province of Afghanistan. He died less than a week later. It was his fourth overseas deployment. Tragically, his older brother, Jeremy Wise, was killed two years earlier, also while serving in Afghanistan. As heartbreaking as it is, however, this boy will always know that his dad was a true hero. He will know that he was brave, committed, and a man of whom he can be proud -- a man of whom we all should be proud. It's easy to get caught up in our everyday lives and take our freedom for granted, but seeing this boy "spending time" with his father like this is a powerful reminder of just how much some sacrifice so that we may raise our children with great freedom.

SFC Benjamin B. Wise, 34, of El Dorado, Ark., died Jan. 15, 2012 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany of injuries sustained on Jan. 9 in Balkh Province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small-arms fire. Wise was assigned to A Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base, Lewis-McChord, Wash. and was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan. This was Wise's fourth deployment.

It is not Veterans Day. Great posts. A day to remember the war dead and the terribly high cost of war.

That poem,Flanders Field, has been taken as both a antiwar and a pro war poem.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

It is chilling.

“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank god such men lived.”
George Patton

May we never, never forget those who sacrificed it all.
