Plastic pollution is a big issue for the Gulf of Mexico. According to recent research by Louisiana State University, the Gulf has one of the world's highest concentrations of marine plastic. Each net or bottle dipped into the Gulf by LSU researchers came up laden with plastic.

"We found it every time," LSU's Mark Benfield told NOLA.com The Times-Picayune in August.

Last year, a volunteer beach cleanup on three miles of Elmer's Island gathered more than 170 plastic six-pack rings, along with 4,000 pounds of other trash.

I'm a "turtle lover". Have been cutting the can rings my whole life.

That's a great idea.
Not as good an idea as people just f*#@king cleaning up after themselves, but a close second.

Anything helps, the amount of plastic particulates I see floating in the deep ocean is sickening.

Someone is finally using their head to come up with a solution. We have some of the greatest technological minds but can't come up with a brilliant idea as biodegradable or edible products which marine animals can ingest...

Great idea. Another way is to buy beer in 12 or 24 packs... which I do!
