Default Gemstone guidance

I have a couple of gemstones sitting around collecting dust. I want to sell them, but I'm not sure the best way to approach the situation. Local jewelry stores offer about 5% of their insurance value and 10% of their retail value. Where and how should I try to sell these and not get completely hosed?

This is what I have:
69.75 carat aquamarine - rectangular step cut (emerald cut), strong light green-blue and SI1 clarity

38.54 carat aquamarine same cut as above and very light, very strongly greenish-blue and VS clarity

18.04 carat blue zircon, medium light, very strongly bluish-green color and SI clarity. Stone needs to be recut.

46.67 carat citrine quartz, same cut as the aquamarines, medium dark orange VS clarity

You have found the problem with loose semi-precious gemstones and that is ‘who is going to buy them’? Resalers will pay a small fraction of supposedly retail because they have their money tied up in the stone. My suggestion and it is only a guess from seeing what is out there and the occasional foray into this area, is to get several guesstimates from jewelers, then put them on EBay at no more than 50% of ‘value’ with a reserve and see what happens.

God luck.

Have you tried a jewelry store that makes custom jewelry? They can turn a loose stone into an item they can sell retail.

I came back from a trip to Australia with opals I bought in Melbourne. A local custom jewelry maker was willing to pay me what I had paid for those gems.

Mentioned above, try Ebay. I've purchased a number of quality stones there in the past (mostly black opals) and had them custom set locally for the wife. The jeweler was surprised by the quality and what I paid for them. Said they were worth 2 to 3 times that in today's market. Have had some of them for many years.
