Default History Channel Special - Atlantic ICW

Saw an ad tonite for a program on the History Chanel tomorrow (Thursday) nite at 9:00P.M. (EST) about the "Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway".

Should be interesting for those of us that don't get to "see"/travel it very often!

Regards,

Bruce,

Thanks for the heads up. I would have missed it. I have to go out but have the dvd recorder set. This is one I sure as hell don't want to miss.

I'll see if I can stay awake for it. Thats 10:00P AST for me. I'm usually into my badly needed first hour of beauty sleep by then.

I watched it last night and found it to be interesting since I never knew how or why the ICW was created. What pizzed me off a little was the reason given for allowing the southern half to go un maintained. "it doesn't produce enough income to maintain itself". Well, DUH.... if they dredged the darned thing maybe commercial traffic could use it and it could make money......... poor excuse.......

Yeah, the catch-22 was great: The silt build up is too much so there are not many freighters who can use the waterway for cargo shipping in the southern half -- however, budget funds are assigned for dredging based on the amount of cargo traffic!

It's so stupid

Interesting show - I'll admit, I didn't know much about the "history" of the ICW?

Yep, SAD to hear that the Southern part doesn't get the funding it should.

I think Norfolk is at the "mid-point" of the Atlantic ICW - a "zero marker" or something similar?

I don't think many (if any) boats use the "Dismal Swamp ICW Canal" nowadays - NARROW and prone to get "low", I think? Also, not much in the way of "help/provisions", if needed.

Mile 0 is located at Hospital Point, Marker #36 (just east of the Portsmouth Naval Hospital).
See chart 12206 or 12253

The cruising sailboaters still use the Dismal Swap Canal when it is open. I cruised it on Memorial Day weekend, no major problems then.

I caught the tail end of it thursday night, missed the first half due to actually having been on the ICW all day. Looks like It will be reairing at 1PM on the 3rd of august, got it programed to Tivo.

To me it is amazing to see the drop in commercial traffic along the coast of SC. I've been going up & down the SC coast on the ICW several times a year with my family for the past 10 or 12 years, you used to see tons of barges on each trip, past few times I've been I havent' seen any.
