Default Home Depot and Lowe's treating customers like criminals

I go to the big box hardware stores a lot because I have a family that likes to break stuff. It's been irritating me lately that they assume everyone who walks through the door is a criminal and treat them as such. Let me provide examples:

The new HD that just opened down the street has these little screens in every aisle that beep at you constantly and show you a video of you. It's really friggin annoying to walk down an aisle and get beeped at the whole time. And if your standing in the aisle to decide between brands or sizes it continuously beeps at you. Are they trying to piss you off while your shopping?

Security tags. Why does everything have a security tag on it now. Just last week I bought a $20 set of drill bits and it had a big black security tag on it. Of course you can't use the self checkout line when these bulky black spider tags are used, so you have to wait in a long line. When they get to you the old lady has to find some special key to release the tag. Actually she wasn't strong enough so I had to do it for her. It's $20 friggin bucks C'mon...

Exit door alarms. Just today I bought an extension cord, Stainless screws, wire stripper, and silicone spray. After going through the self checkout line everything seemed fine. Next thing I know the assistant manager is chasing me down in the parking lot yelling at me. He says I have to return to the store immediately. I bought $35 worth of stuff (chump change) and he's treating me like I stole something. I'm on my lunch break so I'm dressed nice and in a hurry. I say I don't have the time to which he responds "don't make me call the cops". I actually did say "go ahead I didn't do anything wrong" but after I said it had a change of heart and went back into the store. It seems the $15 wire stripper I bought had a hidden security tag. When I used the self checkout it never warned me or told me here was a tag. So I get chased down in the parking lot like I stole something... Next time I'm not going to stop.

I know I'm going to get comments like "retail theft creates billions in losses every year... yada, yada, yada" That's no reason to give the honest customers a hard time. No reason to have the whole friggin store beep at you, have security tags that are so secure your staff can't take them off, or chase honest customers down in the parking lot.

I guess they know you have no choice and have to shop there since all the local hardware stores closed. So that gives them the right to make your shopping experience crappy and treat you like a criminal.

Honest people are expected to compensate for the dishonest ones. If you don't like the way you were treated don't go back.

Drill bits, extension cords, Stainless screws, wire strippers, silicone spray, etc. are often sold at neighborhood hardware stores without all that drama. You'll probably pay more to avoid the drama and the long lines.

This. Home Depot in particular adapts to the neighborhood its in. The HD near my current project (construction) is the nicest I have ever seen anywhere and doesn't have any of that shit. The one I always stopped at on the way to my last project was in the ghetto and did have all that stuff. It was also always a mess and frequently out of stuff so it complimented the ghetto area well. I trip the door alarm all the time and never stop. No one has chased me down yet but if they do I like to think I'd tell them to F' off.

Actually, this can be directly blamed on you, and me, and everyone else that allowed a very large portion of this countries population to morph into what we have today. Thieves, liars, govt dependent socialist scum bags who truly think they're owed everything. Home Depot is as much to blame as well for not giving a shit about the $20 dollar drill bit case that walked out the doors for so many decades, which just feeds the criminal masses with an entitalist attitude!

But, I know.....it's everyone's else's fault!

I hate it too.
how many times are you walking out of a store, any store, and one of those Friggen alarms start buzzing!!
I never even pay the slightest attention to them. I will not stop to answer anything, to anyone! I do hear them and they do piss me off though.
We are not all criminals.I do not steal.why are there so many places today that make you feel like one?

This...they have no authority to detain or otherwise prevent you from leaving. If they did physically prevent you from leaving, they could be sued for false imprisonment/false arrest or something similar. It's amusing watching people who accidentally set off the alarm come back into the store with the tail tucked between their legs like they did something wrong. I've set off the alarm a couple times, always just keep walking. Never had anyone come after me though.

What ever happened when you went to a store and a cashier actually took your money.
Home Depot has no one to help you find anything then after you walk around for an hour
you have to check yourself out. WTF

Side note Target is the same. I complained and the front end manager said we have 17 registers open
and my answer was two with an actual person.

Amazon Prime is my answer

I believe your ignorant as to the # of people who actively steal from stores! The #'s would astound you!!!!! All races, All age groups.
Oh, the word ignorant is not a put-down, all of us are ignorant on many issues! Stores lose Billions each year to things just walking out the door, which you pay for!

There was was a thread here many years ago where the OP witnessed a person stealing something, said absolutely nothing to anyone, couldn't be bothered to get involved. Asked what everyone else would have done. Boy was he and many others pissed off at me when I called them all complete cowards! I still remember those "PM's" to this day!

If our local HD/Lowes has all of this security stuff I have not noticed it nor would it bother me. It's unfortunate that a company has to spend the money on this kind of security stuff, I'm sure they would rather not have to buy all of this stuff. Stealing is a big deal in retail and if a company can reduce stealing and not have to pass on the cost of stolen goods than I'm all for more security. I go to HD first for everything, the people at our local HD are great. They always help load stuff without even being asked and very helpful with any questions. I have a guy that used to work for me that works at HD and he said it's a great place to work, that explains why the people are to good to deal with.

On rare occasions I have set off those alarms - I stop, look back at the cashier I just left, and they generally just wave me out the door. In the last 10 years I have probably spent a good 90 seconds on such activity.

At HD, there are 4 self checkout stations with a (wo)manned desk in the middle. She will scan an oversized item for you, neutralize a security tag, and she's proactive about it, so I have no concern with how HD handles things. I've read about some pretty brazen thefts at HD, guys just loading up a cart with a chain saw and a bunch of wood and strolling out the door.

I prefer how they do it now than to how they did it in the early days - the tool crib had most of the high value stuff, and that was completely enclosed and had it's own checkout, which might mean waiting in two lines if you needed other stuff.

And the local Ace doesn't have any of this, just registers by the door so they can watch.

What pisses me off is the dude or dudet at walmart that stops you and asks to see your receipt... The look on their faces when I tell them no thank you and keep walking is priceless.

My wife’s nephew is a manager of a HD, he informed me that if an employee stops someone they think shoplifted, that employees can be fired.

they figure in the cost of thef ,we pay for their stupidity.

The brazen shit happens because most ALL of these companies are complete cowards and cow-tow to scum bag lawyers who have truly "F'd Up", this country and therefore allow thieves to walk away with product. We pay for it out the ass too!

Time for my pills, My blood pressure is headed north.
