It's probably about 1.5 miles from my office. It's horrifying to see. I can say the accident was all caught on video from traffic cameras so they know what happened, we'll all find out when they make a public statement. Helicopters couldn't fly because of the weather. There is a medical helo stationed within 1/2 mile from the site too, shame they couldn't fly.

My guess is the ceiling was to low to safely land.

So apparently the bus tried to make a U-turn across three lanes of traffic through the center median.

I'm speechless.

I read where that could be the probable cause. News is awfully mum about it. They sure want the truck to be the blame. There had to be plenty of eye witnesses and cameras.

Unfortunately it's not that simple.

Unless there is a GPS approach to the scene of the crash (which there isn't) or an airport with a suitable instrument approach procedure in the immediate vicinity of the accident scene, the time savings and practicality of flying trauma patients IFR EMS can go out the window.

In some cases where it's very rural it might be practical but then you are still transferring the patient from squad to aircraft and depending on injuries / condition that might not make medical sense.

Many times whether IFR or VFR getting in a ground ambulance and driving to the nearest trauma center immediately is faster than waiting on the helo.

yup
my buddy is a trooper and he said that’s what happened.
Last he told me they were looking at the camera footagr from the bus itself. But wasn’t sure if it was clear ... or if it just shows the driver himself or showing the back of the bus.

Absolutey disgraceful.

If that hat was my kid - or any of the kids bay got hurt.
Id be indicted on murder 2

A 77 year old school bus driver, why not? These buses should not be allowed on a highway, at least not out of the right lane.

A couple of years back I was following my God daughters school bus on a field trip, the driver missed a turn and went up a one way exit ramp the wrong way to get back on the highway, when they arrived safely at the location I tore into him, everyone of the parents on that bus defended the driver. I was flabbergasted, my bet is they didn't even realize what happened.

There is camera footage that I "didn't see" that shows exactly what happened. Its even WORSE than the bus trying to make the center cut through, he tried to cut across three lanes of traffic from the on ramp all the way on the right! The dump truck didn't even have a chance to avoid the collision. Absolutely Unreal. The only slight defense I can give the driver is that he probably had 35 loud and excited 11 year olds, and chaperones yelling directions at him because he was clearly lost. But short of someone else yanking the wheel he still made a horrible decision that shouldn't have even been a possibility in his mind.
