Default New Laptop help

Hello All.

I am retired and need a laptop for none other than:

1. Web surfing.
2. Email
3. Basic office functions: Word, Excel, etc-nothing fancy

Looking at laptops from Amazon, Best Buy, etc., I have a couple of questions.

1. Can I get a laptop, ready to go, with all the "stuff" loaded and security? I don't want to spend hours setting it up.
2. I want to spend less that $500.00

Ideas?

Get yourself a nice Chromebook; they were made for exactly what you are going to use it for. Can be had for under $500 easily.

Don't bother with MS office (or MS in general, actually). Google drive + Google docs. That's all ya need.

X2 to this. My MacBook Pro blew up on a business trip and I needed something quick. So I bought an Acer 14 at Costco for about $250 bucks, That was a little over year ago and I still haven't got around to repairing the Mac.

It's also REALLY hard to f up a chromebook. Wife switched to google drive and google docs 2 years ago and it's worked out fine. She does far more with spreadsheets than normal people, and google's office suite works just fine.
