We take a small percentage for personal use - gifts for each other, gifts for ourselves that we don't want to fight with other person about.

Everything else goes into a joint account, and all expenses are paid from that.

When married we had one account ------ big mistake

Now girlfriend living with me - separate accounts and she pays pro rata share of expenses - mostly just food and stuff for the house ...

Married 40 years in August. I've always paid the bills she has always done the book work. We have been self employed 38 of our 40 married years.

full disclaimer - we are in the 3 pots of money - with the JT pot managed by me - we both work full time, I make almost twice of what she does and fund the JT account based on a ratio of combined salaries

Ideally I would like to simplify to either 1 or 2 pots but pretty sure 1 pot would not work given our very different views on spending habits

We have 2 accounts, kind of. I fund them all. She keeps a small amount in her checking account for small purchases. She uses the credit card for most things. I pay that and every other bill we have from my account. I don't bitch about the CC bill and she doesn't say what I can and cant buy because I earn the only income.

Been married for 27 years, this is something I've learned along the way; Her money is hers and my money is ours. That being said we have two separate accounts (with both our names on each account), rarely have issues.

Not married yet, but living together and engaged.

2 pots and split bills. Everything but mortgage is split evenly. I pay most of the mortgage plus extra principal every month. I, also, pay for taxes/insurance on recreational vehicles like boat, ATVs, etc. She did give me $3k for down payment on boat and spent $5k on fence and I put stamped concrete patio in, so it can go both ways. I really didn't want the fence, but enjoy it now.

Two accounts, but both names on each. My paycheck (she doesn't work) is deposited into "hers" and she pays most bills. I transfer Sub S distributions and take care of a few bills like taxes, etc. at the coast and my credit card. We have basically two credit cards, even though both names are on each. She pays "hers" and I pay "mine".

Out of curiosity those with two accounts, are both names on both accounts? I've seen it done both ways. We did because it makes it easier if something happens to one of us. The other school of thought is not to so she can't clean you out if something goes south.

You do know "she" could sign one of your checks "Mr. Potato head" and the bank would cash it?.....

If married......one acct
engaged...... start moving twoards one acct
dating...........your nuts if one acct.

Seriously, marriage is by definition the combining of two individuals that now work, love, play as one! One account!
Trust is everything, don't have that then you really don't have a marriage either!!!

In all of my marriages(more than one), I have found that separate accounts, with expenses split(not necessarily 50-50) worked best. Joint accounts never worked...and one person paying all the bills didn't either. Those arrangements always ended up in disagreements...especially if I bought something for the boat...

We have a lot of accounts to be honest.

Most everything comes out of the combined checking account....some of the larger expenses come out of a different account where 50% of my income goes.

She makes 1/3 - 1/2 of what I do, so I take up some slack on health insurance, car payments, etc...

Everything combined was a recipe for disaster in marriage #1. Live and learn. In marriage #2, I pay the house, utilities and my bills, she buys groceries and pays her bills. Separate accounts, credit cards, everything. It's worked for 20 years so far and there is no fighting about money or who spent what. Of course, major purchases (vehicles, home improvements, vacations, etc.) are always discussed in advance. But day-to-day? Pay as you go, no worries or nonsense over "You bought a new fishing rod!" or that kind of stuff.
