Default Digital Hotel Key

Going in a few days to stay at a Hilton. They are pushing putting their app on my phone and using the phone as the room key.

Any pros or cons? Obviously with anything digital hacking is an issue as well as privacy.

I have used it. It's more of a gimmick than anything else. I found the app would burn up my battery because it was tracking my location. So make sure to turn that off. It is also slow to react to the lock.
The only time I use it is if I self check in and bypass the front desk. The next morning I go get a card key.

I am a long time Hilton Diamond member I use it when possible its nice to bypass the front desk people. If you don't use Hilton much than maybe not worth the time

There is not much to be concerned with as far as privacy goes, however the app is, IMO, kind of kludgy. As someone else mentioned, it can be handy to bypass the front desk, or if you lost your key. I sometimes use the app to checkin and get access to the room if there is a line at the front desk, or if I just want to drop my stuff in the room, but then go and get one of the credit card keys, which open the door almost instantly, whereas the app takes a few seconds.

With the app, the front desk will be able to turn on your phone's camera so they can watch you "gettin' busy"!

OK I got the key app and requested my key. Then the GD thing says I have to show my ID to the front desk to get the digital key. I thought the goal was to bypass the front desk. Maybe because it is my first time using.

The app is done by UTC and its Lenel division the encryption is strong I don't think you have anything to worry about. Lenel has been in there access control business for along time the FEDGOV uses lenel extensively. Lenel was actually started by to Russian expats who sold out to UTC the husband passed on but the wife has a large castle in Europe some where.

I use it every time. Always works fine and I can usually go straight to parking back or side whatever is closest to the room I pick. No need to wait in line.

First time only for ID. After that it's usefulness is to bypass lines.

The front desk said I did not have to check in with them and sure enough the key is was on the phone. Only issue is that it takes longer to pull phone out, find app, open app, and scan than it does to pull the card key out of shirt pocket and scan.

Give me the old school diamond shaped key tag with “Arlen Motor Lodge” embossed on it and the room number stamped in the key!

I like the card keys. We have a bowl full where we have been collecting them for years. And don't give me a hard time for "stealing" a 15 cent card from a $200 room.

13 years diamond member. I use it to bypass the desk at check-in, but I'll get a key later when there is nobody at the desk. The app is ok, but slow sometimes. You stand in front of your door 3-5 seconds before it unlocks.

The app is worth it for the online check-in and to pick your room. If you don't stay often just delete it after you leave.

If you're not an hhonors member give them my acct number so I get the points and nights

The only issue I had was not getting upgraded due to picking my room. Normally not a big deal but in the UK it was the difference between AC and just a fan. They changed my room the next day and said check in at the desk to avoid the issue. That was a while back though so maybe it changed.
