Default I got scammed (almost?)

Dammit, I am smarter than this. Long story short. The admiral kinda messed up our digital camera last week. Digital cameras don't mix well with mountains, wet grass, alcohol, and asphalt.

I have always wanted a SLR digital so I did some surfing and found what appeared to be a really good deal on a camera so I placed the order. I get home and get a call from Best Price Cameras wanting to confirm the order. He asks whether I want the 2 hour battery for $99 or the 4 hour battery for $129. What, it doesn't come with the battery? I asked him what else wasn't included and he informed me that the $99 battery charger wasn't included. Now I am $230 more than the order showed so I told him to cancel it and send me an e-mail. No e-mail so I e-mailed them confirming the cancellation. Again, no return e-mail.

I did a search on bestpricecameras.com and all I found was reports of scams. Now I am scared because I gave these bastids my CC#. I called Visa and they said there had been no charges on the card and offered to put a hold on it which we did. Should I do anything else? Please don't call me stupid. I already know that.

You did nothing stupid Shag. Honest people are always at risk, even when not on the internet. Just keep your eye on your statement to make certain they don't try to pass on the charge 6 months from now.

I would report the card lost/stolen. THat way the number on the card becomes "flagged" and inactive and anyone that tries to run the number will be flagged as well. You will be re-issued a new card with a different number in a few days. This is the only way I see to protect yourself in the event that someone tried to do what racencase warns against.

I have to mirror Matt's comments.....cancel the card!

IMO your actions do not fall under the category of being stupid. I wouldn't even consider your actions to be a mistake, just an error that anyone could make.

Thanks for the heads up

I just went through the exact situation a couple months ago with a company called Genius Cameras. Their advertised price was several hundred dollars less than everywhere else. So when I placed the order online, I received a confirmation saying to call the 800 number to "complete the order process". When I called, I was asked by some fast talking jackass whether I needed lenses, memory cards and batteries. The prices for their "high speed" memory cards were about 3 times what you can buy them for elsewhere. I told him I wanted nothing but the camera body at which point he said fine. I then received an e-mail a few days later saying that the camera was not in stock (despite the fact I was told it was and was available for immediate shipment when I placed the order).
I then canceled my order with them when they couldn't tell me when they would have more available. After I realized the whole thing was a scam, I tried to see if I could get my credit card company to block any charges but they said they could not do so. I had to make several requests for confirmation of my cancellation via e-mail but eventually got it. Keep trying.
The bottom line is that they won't sell you the camera for their advertised price unless you buy the astronomically priced accessories. I ended up using Beach Camera and received both great service and a great price and actually received the camera with the battery (they do come with a battery) the next day.

Shag, honest people don't think about scams, we order things in good faith and we just blindly expect others to have the same honesty as we do....... Unfortunately the world is rapidly changing and I guess we need to do the same, just stop trusting anyone, for anything...... Sad state of affairs........ Find their location and we'll "drop by" one night after work for a "beer"........ Better yet, go back and find the crazed, motorcycle attacking, cop beating, Shag eating squirrel, box him up and send it to THEM !!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies. I still feel stupid for not doing a search on bestpricecameras.com before ordering. Google almost choked with all the negative sites I found. The card is on hold but I am going to take ya'll's advice and cancel it and get me another one.

Bailey, from what I have read most of these scams are in the New York "camera" district. I did some shopping in their stores when we were up there last year and the people were pushy and I could never nail anything down. Funny thing is, I can get what I was wanting, in person, at Circuit City for about the same price.

Stupid??? On the contrary. What you did was smart. You used a credit card. As long as there are catalogs, internet, and phone sales, there will always be ripoffs. Use a credit card, and you limit your losses.

I can't say enough for Abe's of Maine for cameras. Their prices are tough to beat and they're pretty honest. Sorry to hear about your misfortune though.

You are not alone. There are tons of stories EXACTLY like yours form
just the first site I browsed. I found the following interesting.

"within days of my submitting my credit card number to their site, my bank called to ask if I had made a political contribution in the UK for one dollar. Of course I had not. The bank said this was a "tester" and that someone was checking to see if we were paying attention to the charges on the card,"

You need to cancel that card ASAP.

I don't think you will see false charges on your card. These New York "camera district" companies are not in business to break the law- they just have sleazy business practices. Their sole goal is the bait and switch.

I disagree. Bait and switch, in and of itself is illegal. And I'd bet $$$ that some
of their Customer Service Reps would not be above selling your CC # to a third
party for a piece of the action. After all, at look how they make their living, running
and/or participating in a scam.

I don't care who you are, that right there is funny!! When it comes to insurance I am like the cobbler's kids.

I went ahead and cancelled the card. They were very nice about it. Of course I wouldn't expect less from a Harley Davidson Visa. I guess they don't want to get burned any more than I do.

radioshop, thanks for the reference to Abe's.

For the record, Shag is a stand up dude. Yes he is in the Insurance Bidness ( vile as it is ), but he is still a damn good guy.. He and I have tangled on the insurance industry before. But dam, honest good people can agree to disagree on some things. For those who cant...FU.

Hey Shag this may seem funny but I have had excellent luck buying cameras at pawn shops. Like everything else you must know what its worth and what you want. Most pawn shops will prove everything works and give you a couple days return option. Better than Ebay in that respect. I have bought a pair of Cannon SLRs at different pawn shops for good prices and had no issues at all to date. Plus its fun browsing all the other stuff, didn't you always want a flying V bass guitar?
