Last interview I was in, as the service manager, I asked " why should I hire you?, I only ask this, because I hated getting asked these questions growing up, and now I can finally ask it. I really don't care for the answer, just wanted to actually say it"

[QUOTE=Lobstababe;11343088]Resident HR Manager here!

For any accounting/bookkeeping candidate I like asking how much money will fit in a shoe box?

What size shoes were they?

The reply should be..."why should I work for you? I have a job, you have the opening. I'm more than qualified, seems like you need me more than I need you...start selling me"

I enjoy, why are you looking to leave your current employer. Most give them standard, appropriate answer. Every now and then I get the truth - pay sucks, hate my boss, fight with co-oworkers. Makes me shake my head.

I was asked to tell a joke once during an interview. I hated that question.

Once had a hiring mgr ask me where I would hide an elephant in Boston..

If it hadn't been at a buddy's employer, I would have replied: "in your wife's ass"..and walked out.

I hate when people ask questions that are not relevant to the role and no, it's not about problem solving skills, creativity, etc.

"Brain teaser" questions are stupid and very out of date. The goal is not to try and play "stump the chump", but to determine if the person will be a good cultural fit, for whatever your office culture is, and if they will be able to adequately fill any missing gaps in knowledge/experience easily enough to come up to speed for the job.

I do usually try to ask why they are looking, how they heard about the position (if you don't already know this), what they have heard/think of your company (see if they have done basic background preparation), what they have in mind for career progression, etc.

This question checks your logic, what size is the box, what denominations are the bills, then calculate the amount that could fit. Lack of a response shows the inability to think out side the box and to think on your feet, you can see how they think by the questions they ask aka critial thinking skills!

I would add one other thought

make sure the questions you ask do not have a reverse affect. I once went to an interview out of state, at a co's expense.

by the end of the interview I was driving the discussion and my final question for the mgr was "you didn't actually prepare for this discussion did you"

I did get a job offer from them, and I turned it down. if they couldn't take an interview serious, what else would be a disaster there.

it cost them a lot of money for that interview, and for nothing basically because they blew it with lack of preparation

My wife was asked, "lf I offered you $1,000 to drive a car with a trunk load of cocaine to a certain place and drop it off what would you do?"

Real quick, how many ten dollar bills can you get in a 12x9x6 shoe box?
