Default A positive thread about west marine?

Well here I go.....I’m going to do it........west marine is now great!

I shopped there on Sunday for the first time in many many years for something other than a piece I needed immediately. Their new price match program is the best in the retail business. All you have to do is load your cart with whatever it is you need, or want for that matter, and bring it to the register. As the cashier picks up each item, search it on your smart phone (google) and show them the lowest price. They immediately match it. A few examples. I picked up a can of Trilix 33 spray. Their price on the shelf was 44.99. Some random website had it for 24.99 plus shipping. WM have it to me for 24.99... my diver zinc was almost 60 bucks in the store. The popular boat zinc website had it for 30. Again plus shipping. WM gave it to me for 30. The guy in front of me got an 85 dollar pair of shoes for 24 bucks. A good friend of mine just picked up a few penn international 16VSXs there for the best price you can find new anywhere on the web period. Actually cheaper than some people have theirs used listed right on this site!

There is no reason to shop anywhere else right now. I know people like to support their local mom and pops. So do I. tThe local WM here is one of their flagships. They have a tremendous variety in stock. Their problem has always been their prices. For now that is gone....better than gone when you figure you get it now and without shipping fees. Plus I still feel like I am supporting local people as dozens of young guys and gals work there...

they screwed me for years I know

but I can forgive and forget to save a bunch of money on my addiction

go ahead, bash me away....I’m a big boy I can take it...

Had a great shopping experience on an item that had been backordered/discontinued last week. I have a WM rewards card and they even reinstated all of my expired $10 off certificates. Yes some items are overpriced but you just have to be a smart shopper.

Well thats good to hear, until they figure this issue out and then change their policy to only price match with actual box stores they consider competitors. It has happened with alot of places after they realized their losing out.

I guess thatís a step in the right direction. I still have issues of their practice of way over pricing items. There should be a level of trust but verify with anyone you do business with repeatedly. WM has zero in my book, nor do they care.

That item your talking about for $24.99 that they had at $44.99. If they were somewhat reasonable at $29.99, everyone wins.

yep, I was going to have them price match some oil and parts for me. They didnít have all of the parts, so I was going to have to order them anyway. When I saw that they were normally selling it for $30 per gallon more I decided I opulent let them price match me. I would just order from the other place.

I'm a fan of West Marine. Admittedly, their prices on some things can be outrageous, but they frequently have sales (i.e. fantastic friday sales, clearance sales, etc.) The new price match policy makes it even better. I bought a Spartan swiss army knife there (normal price anywhere is $30) for $9.97 on clearance (ended up buying 11 of them to use as gifts for my best clients, and ended up with some very happy clients). If you watch their sales, you can get some real steals. I'm glad to have one close to my beach house, as it's very convenient. If I have the choice between spending an extra $5 on something at West Marine, or not going fishing, I'll happily spend the extra $5.00. There are some things that their regular price is the cheapest I can find anywhere (i.e. the big 2.64 gallon jug of Quicksilver DFI oil - though I did find one place online that sold it for cheaper, if you didn't have to pay for shipping, so I used that to get a price match).

Oh no you didn't!!!

You know that is against THT rules.

Anyway...........

West Marine is about the only game in town if you want boat parts, hardware etc.. I have hitting the local West Marine hard the past couple of weeks. I was looking at a few items and the salesman ask if I had my smartphone.

Kinda looked at him funny and he smiled and to price match.

Precisely. They are playing games hoping that you don't find the lowest and end up overpaying. If I'm going to have to sort through searches and all of that crap, I'll just stay home and order it online.

How about everyday lower prices. I don't mind paying a little more to support the brick and mortar operations, but don't make me go through that searching process.

Excellent thinking. The more people that think like you, the shorter the lines will be for me! ; )

I went in one last wknd, it was not positive. Their selection was like Targets. One of everything, not multiples, (which I needed). Didnt even have 400# mono. Many of the shelves were empty.

Never have an issue with West Marine, they seem to be stocked well and the staff here in the Outer Banks is always friendly. I do wish they would carry a larger selection of fishing equipment though.

Never had a problem. I use the price match for electronics or big ticket items and research ahead and bring a printout. There really is no other store in the area since our Marina Store changed hands and they had basically the same policy.

The way they make money with this policy is that most will not use it and pay the premium. They get you in the store at least and you buy more than you came for.

I have no problem with that. Their cash registers lines are empty when us old retired folks shop.

IN NY you need a paper print out. They will not let you use your smart phone and show them .

Went recently and had a different feel..

Actually bought some stuff on clearance(some killer deals/$20 sperry's, $40 star rod/reel combo, blacktip knives) and some other stuff. Spent $300 unplanned in a place I rarely spend $30.

The wont be beat price match thing is nice but most of what they sell that i'm interested is branded by them anyway(restoring an old trawler/need fiberglass supplies/west system is $$).
