Default Best Stone Crab Trap for the Keys

Hey guys-

My wife and I are trailering down to the keys to fish the flats and we would like to try trapping some stone crab this year. I contacted the FWC and reviewed all the rules and regs now I'm just curious about the best trap to purchase (or should I just make some).

I would love a wire trap that is collaspable (Danielson stone crab traps on Amazon) but I can't find any that meet all the rules/regs.

I also found some plastic traps from Cudjoe Sales but seems like they would take up a lot of space.

What do you recommend? Thanks!

I would check with Crook & Crook

Mine always ended up getting stolen.

I use the plastic traps from Cudjoe Sales, and they work well.
They do take up space and you need to pour concrete bottoms in them.
If you are vacationing I think you are better off buying the crab claws.
Even if you drop them in a good spot with good bait it will be 3 days before you pull them and have decent crabs. Maybe its better crabbing in the keys, but here in west central Florida it takes time to get the crabs.

Thanks guys, you're probably 100% right about just buying the claws but my wife and I love to learn new things.

I'm going to post on craigslist to see if someone will rent me five traps for a week as I live in Michigan and don't have much use for them back home. If I can't find anyone I'll probably go w/ the tried and true plastic traps.
