Default Who's into amateur racing or HPDE?

I saw the thread about the PCA group in GA, sad day for all involved. Sounded like quite a few of you had some sort of racing experience. My dad took me to Bondurant's 3 day high performance driving class for my 16th birthday, that was an absolute blast and great education experience. We took his (new at the time) '99 Corvette out, pretty awesome experience for a 16 year old.

Fast forward to now, in my mid 30's finally have my own car worth tracking. 2016 BMW 340i. Been to 3 HPDE events, first two with NASA and last one with PCA. They are tons of fun! First session with NASA was DE1, second was DE2, and got the approval at the end of the day to bump to DE3 next time out. Ran in DE2 with PCA because DE3 was sold out by the time I registered.

It's been interesting as a newbie seeing the difference between the two groups. NASA is very structured and rigid, extreme emphasis put on safety. Anytime someone in the DE groups puts wheels off the track, we have to talk about it. If someone goes 4 wheels off, they sit out the next session. One guy spun and we had a big meeting about it, and he sat out the next session. PCA was much more laid back. There were several people off track, one guy spun into a runoff area and another actually hit a wall. Nobody said a word about any of them except the guy who hit the wall, and even then it was just a passing comment. I liked the laid back social atmosphere with PCA (much less intense without the competition guys out there), but the "it happens" attitude of people going off track kinda rubbed me the wrong way for a DE-only event. I'm on the fence about trying another event with PCA vs just sticking with NASA in the future. Anyone else have experience or comparison between the two?

Anyway, we ran Bondurant Main track at Wild Horse Pass, got some good in-car footage this time out.

Best lap of the day:

Full session (~17.5 minutes):

Size: 189.1 KBI track a ‘14 camaro. Have done couple tracks around me.
Going to Road Atlanta in March for a track day. So sad what happened to Roebling.
I saw a crash in front of me at homestead when I was there a couple months ago. Attachment 1051433
He never lifted and went straight into the wall. Was his first track day and with his retirement toy he had bought himself. Poor guy was more afraid of what his wife was gonna say than what had just happened. The instructor was telling him to slow down too.

I probably have over 200 days with NASA on the east coast. I went through HPDE and eventually went W2W. It's quite structured....but in a good way. Now that I'm a long term veteran they let us cut loose quite a bit. I've had driver Bio's read over the loud speakers that I wrote for everyone in our race group (and I'm VERY sarcastic!). We've had a racer who is always talking trash black flagged during a race since he was running in the back anyway. Hell, in the middle of the night we ran a chain through a competitors wheels and welded it to the cage just inside his doors! There are plenty more stories....but you get the idea.

I have track records at several tracks, won 4 regional championships....and a National Championship in 2015. So yeah, I'm pretty familiar As for other clubs, I've only done a few. They weren't bad but I prefer NASA because it's a good mix of fun AND safety!

Several years old but:

Instead of a highlight reel....this is a low light reel!

And another one using an old camera:

seacups, nice looking Camaro. That attachment you linked to says it doesn't exist, not sure what's up with that.

t500, those are some great vids, thanks for sharing. What's the deal with the standing starts and people trying to pass? Sounds like you guys have a blast! My very limited experience with NASA sounds exactly like you are describing, good mix of fun and safety.

Our class almost always does a standing start while everyone else does a 35-45 mph rolling start. To make it interesting, the fastest group starts, another group rolls in and starts about 30 seconds behind them.......then we roll up-come to a STOP-then go when our green flag drops. Always a nail biter knowing the first group is going to be catching up to us in the first lap!

The first standing start screw up was from the Hondas in front of us who were supposed to take off, then we'd roll up and get our own start. Again, it has to be quick because cars are coming. Well, a couple guys in the back screwed up so the flagger just kept waving the green because we didn't have time to reset a standing start.

The flagger came over that night to apologize thinking someone would be pissed.....we all thought the whole start was hilarious!
