Default When posting questions and vendors reply or choose other methods

First off this is not rant merely a question.

When starting a thread or posting a question to get feedback from THT members about a product and trying to gain honest unbiased feedback to educate yourself before making a purchase, is it normal for THT vendors of such products to send you PM’s about THEIR product?

I belong to quite a few forums and this is the only one that I get these sales type PM’s

Seems a little strange, almost like unwanted telemarketers (which I ALWAYS hang up on)
If they want to lend their experience and professional knowledge IN THE THREAD that’s great and it can be an informed educational discussion. That knowledge and experience IMHO can lead to sales and a pleasant experience.

The PM thing seems a little cut throat, and a turn off, but I guess to each is own.

Vendors expect to get something in return for their investment in the forum. Access to a potential customer base is what they get. That said, I think its somewhat unscrupulous for a vendor to chime in to sell you product 'B', if the thread was about product 'A'.

Either way, that action should inform your decision as to whether to do business with them.

I would put it in your post not via a PM. I would be up front that I am a dealer/vendor though. Or I might tell you to contact me if it was something that need a conversation.

I agree with this 100%. I understand what bobeast is getting at but they shouldnt "expect" anything. Seems today the model is give, give, give and you might get. It might not turn around right away for them but if their intent is there to help, they will be successful.

This forum started out as a place for users to help each other. Somewhere along the line, businesses have "joined" in. Just look in the marine electronics thread, there isnt one post where some of the big hitters have replied pushing their products only and bashing the others. Sometimes the "other products" they used to carry and push too!

The Bimini 2018 thread has lots of stuff. like this. Every time someone ask a question, a property owner tries to sell him a rental. Some rental places go as far as posting threads every time they change something on their property.

I feel like almost half the posts are trying to sell something at times. Almost none of those people are sponsors either.

In my opinion, that is different if it is an individual. When a company does it, it looks desperate. I guess it can be viewed as desperate either way but if its just a guy trying to rent his house on the side vs. his business - desperation is more acceptable to me. Thats just my view.

Vendors are prohibited from sales or marketing other than their respective forums or the Commercial sales forum. So effectively if you post a question and the Vendors response is I can sell that that to you or click on my link, the post will be deleted and the vendor will have to wear a Dunce Cap.

That makes sense why they PM then! One vendor on here (that I personally have had a horrible experience with on several levels, and have been vocal able my distaste for) walks this line, I believe. I have come close to posting our email chain on here to warn others but have decided not to.

A little hostility on a Thursday night? I'm not the OP but I agree with him. He is not bitching about the site at all but merely how some "members" behavior is getting out of hand. Again, I happen to agree.

Now the question is; which one of "them" do you work for?

I wouldn't say "just a fireman", some of us really appreciate what you do. I'm one of them. Thank you.
