Default Obtaining arrest records and other records (Virginia)

The “search any name here” sites seem pretty bogus. Presuming one had a legitimate need to obtain arrest records (e.g., for a domestic assault and a gun-related offense) on someone in Virginia, is there any way (without hiring an attorney) to get the arrest records? Can a private citizen have someone’s arrest records (or medical or mental health treatment records, for that matter) subpoenaed without an attorney?

Assume that the records (and the method used to obtain them) would ultimately be discussed in Court, and the individual and his attorney would object to and try to exclude the records.

Thanks in advance!

Some of that is public records. Available to everyone. Arrests, convictions, etc. You can't subpoenae them, but you can look at them and print them out.

I don't know about VA, but in FL, with basic info you can find that out online. You need to know the county and persons name and you can get them. If they have a common name, the more info you have, the better it is and the less stuff you'll have to sift through. If you pull up the arrest records for "smith", you'll likely get pages upon pages, but if you have a more specific name or DoB, it will be pretty easy and free.

A PI can do it for you for a few dollars...I used to do back ground checks on tenants and they charged me $39 to find out arrest dates (if any) and the disposition of the case. They can get case files and more info, but the cost go up according to how in depth you want to be.

In our state, any attorney has access to online criminal court records. And they use the database all the time.

I can go into my local newspaper and search anyone's name. Their law and order column is one of their most read columns covering 3 counties and all the individual cities' arrests and convictions. Most local outlaws are frequent fliers in our county jail and the newspaper.

We check out all prospective tenants background and criminal history. We use a website that requires social security number and it costs us $25.

No way! What about the statute of limitations?!?

In all seriousness, this info is not for/about me... I'm trying to get records to help a relative prevail in a custody battle.

I used Virginia Courts Case Information website alot when I was recruiting. If you know the county you are looking for, it will be there. They do remove them after 10 years I think though.

As stated above, you can use the online court case site in Virginia. The catch is you have to search all the courts in each county/city separately. There is no way to search in mass that I am aware of, so you would have to focus on your local area.

I would like to know of a simpler way to do this myself when I hire folks.
