Default DPMO Calculation Question.

For those of you, that know what that is I have a question.

I had 170,000 available consulting hours this year which I spent 100,000 hours delivering services to customer engagements. When calculating DPMO would you calculate it based on how many opportunity hours I had to do something which would be 170,000 or on the hours spent actually doing something, 100,000?

If I spent say 200 hours addressing defects if using 100K my DPMO would be 1400 where if it were calculated based on all available hours, 170000 the DPMO would drop to 824

Which method is the correct way to calculate it?

I may be wrong but if there is no chance for a defect to occur then it shouldn’t be included. My understanding is that you would use 100,000.

That is what I was thinking.
