And we don't have near the best healthcare, and our infant mortality rate is pathetic.

Sure, it's "free" in the UK because the government "pays for it." The Guardian, like most of the British press, is to the left of even our own mainstream media. Try the Daily Mail to hear from the other side.... the thousands of people who die every year because the NHS is so overloaded that the physicians do not have the time and resources to perform proper evaluations.

$32k is way too high.

When we had our son in 2015, I wasn't aware that her work-provided health insurance didn't cover anything maternity related. I had to pay for everything out of pocket.

The doctor and hospital shaved most of the cost off when I told them I was self pay. All in all, I was in about $12-$15k.

Yeah but we're real cheap at aborting them so it evens things out.

What? Like you guys weren't thinking it.

Of course we have the best healthcare, Middle Eastern oil shieks and princes don't travel to Europe for healthcare. We don't have cheap healthcare, but that's a different problem that socialism doesn't fix.

The best healthcare money can buy, correct.

But if you can’t afford it you are screwed, given that the USA spends more per capita on healthcare than any country (by a wide margin) you’d expect our overall rank would be near the top.

It’s not...

Man this article is complete bullshit.

You choose all this stupid hospital shit so you gotta pay for it. Your fault.

My partner and I had a son on September 6, 2017. We paid less than 4000 for the birth.

3500 for a midwife, 180 for a cattle trough for the front yard. That was it.

Born just after the sun was topping the Redwoods. A flock of high flying cackling Aleutian geese flew overhead to announce his presence to the world.

Amazing. Cant imagine a hospital birth.

Yeah that's great for you; we tried a midwife, paid it all upfront and ended up transferring to the hospital and having a c section after hours working with the the midwife at the birthing center.

Sometimes it just doesn't work out like you want it to but if not for the hospital we may not have our son.

Total billed was almost $40k.

The midwives and natural birth are great but sometimes you simply don't have a choice.

You don't know much about international healthcare, do you? As a country, we have pretty poor healthcare. Hell, we allow people with doctorates from third world countries to practice here. We have some of the top specialists, but that is about it.

Hell, most publications don't have us in the top 10, many not in the top 20.

The WHO has us at 37.

26th.. but still pathetic....

Why?

Prenatal care, drugs, women over 40..and reporting 24 week gestational data..

Cost is because of the above, and all the Medicaid immigrant babies..

Oh.. and defensive medicine because of litigation

It's not just childbirth, its all healthcare. You can debate on the quality be top notch. But I heard I our healthcare system may be f'd up. No idea if there is any validity to that or not.

Healthcare is in kahoots with insurance. Price healthcare high enough that your forced to buy insurance, then discount the hell out of the services to insurance. Build all sorts of exclusivity contracts, it really is such a beautifully constructed scam. Add the fact that there is nothing more people are afraid of then dying, and they will buy in all day long. No way in hell an insurance carrier pays even 1/2 of that for a child birth.

I am 100% all in for a free market, but Healthcare and Insurance is absolutely fleecing this country.

We’ve got nieces and nephews, didn’t cost us anything. Love them like their ours, but they go home after a few nights. 18 years of marriage with no kids, we’re happy, never felt that we “missed out” on anything. Kids are a blessing, but in today’s world, it’s a major investment and you may not get the return you’re looking for.
