Default PLB, InReach, Spot, or other?

I have a buddy who hikes often, and frequently solo. He doesn't need always let the family know where he will be and once he gets back into the hills, he suffers from wondering what's around the bend...

I want to get him something that will cover his ass if he takes a fall or whatever bad. Or even just runs late. It needs to be light enough he can't not carry it. A PLB is only good to call for help, and only if he can get to it to activate it. I think the other devices will let him reach out with basic messages and may allow the family to track him too. So, if they don't hear from him 1-2 hours after he's supposed to check in, they can let SAR know where he is.

And, it has to function without cell coverage.

Suggestions?

Consider the annual cost of tracking and messaging subscription services. You could make that an annual gift ... kind of like a magazine subscription you might give as a gift. If that's not what you had in mind, the gift may be impractical for him if he doesn't subscribe. SPOT worked great for me, but I would hesitate to buy one for someone else for the above reason.

I use a spot for work and it works great. I work alone in the woods and use it to check in. It emails my location on google maps.

Inreach is great for communication as well that's what I'd get.

I have one it has worked all over remote Alaska.

I have the Delorme Inreach SE. CANNOT beat it for its ruggedness and ability to reach out from anywhere. Battery lasts for a week at least on a charge. Pairs with your phone etc...I dropped mine in a pool in CR and it never skipped a beat.
