Default Worse sunburn stories.

Caught real bad on the backs of my knees drunk on a beach years ago. That was bad. Had two wisdom teeth pulled that morning and started drinking on Vicodin. The tops of the feet gotta be the worst! I don't do that stuff anymore, it was in my younger years. Funny to see the outta towners come in. Go out to dinner at any resort town and you'll see the rookies glowing!

I did mine while completely sober and awake -

Out sailing on my dads little Alcort Catfish on Mission Bay all day - Burned the tops of my feet so badly that the entire tops turned into one solid blister - very weird feeling with all that fluid sloshing around in there.

Couldn't walk for three days, - I was absolutely pitiful, crawling around the house just to cover basics. My wife (now ex) at the time had 0 sympathy. Took about two weeks before I could stand to have anything on my feet.

That was a good 20+ yrs ago, and I've never even come close to burning them since!

I was never one for burning, but I can tan as dark as dark chocolate.

I was about 13. I use to have the big Casio Gshock watch.
Wore that watch for years, never ever took it off.
The watch broke, (a friend threw a skittle candy at me and it shattered the Gshock lens. maybe it was stale)
Well, my wrist hadn't seen sunlight in about 2 or 3 years
The skin was so white you could probably visually take my pulse from 15ft away.
Didn't think to put sunscreen on my wrist.
Went out on the boat all day, and my wrist was completely blistered all the way around, in the exact shape of my watch.
I thought my dang hand was going to fall off.
Same feeling as FearNaut with all the fluid sloshing around.
I now where a metal band loosly so it slides back and forth on my wrist avoiding a tan line in case this should ever happen again.

Years ago, L J decides to do a little topless tanning while I fish, 4 times I tell her "honey, those pups are glowing back at me"..... she continues. Later we're back at the hotel and after her shower it hit's her, "I'm burned"..... Really?????? She lays down on one of the 2 double beds and can't move without hurting.

So being the good guy I am, I go out to a nice dinner and a couple of drinks, BUT, I did bring her back something to eat....... It took her about a week to get to where she could wear a bra without screaming in pain....

Did she learn a lesson???? Fast forward to the next year, and the next year, and the next year..... well, you get the idea........

My friend got seasick, so I let him off on the beach while my son and I continued to fish. He burned the tops of his feet - blisters two inches in diameter and a 1/2 inch tall. He too, applied silver dyne. At the time, he taught woodworking classes for ShopSmith, and had to go to work. He bought flip flops, cut the tops off them, and stuck them to his feet using two sided carpet tape. By the end of the first day, the sawdust had built up a 1/2 inch thick on the top of his feet, sticking to the silver dyne and oozing feet. Was not a pretty sight.

Wasn't me, but I was life-guarding at a base pool in Coronado. A guy laid out on a lounger towards the end of my 4-hour shift. My relief shows up to replace me. I come back nearly four hours later and the guy's STILL laying there!! I go up and gently kick the chair with my foot, the guy opens his eyes and screams. Burned eyelids....burned everything. We had to call sick-bay to bring two corpsmen to get him, he couldn't stand up. They loaded the chair and all into the ambulance. I didn't see the guy again, but from wgat I heard he ended with an article-15 for that one, he was unfit for duty for about three weeks.

1980, Surf City, NC

Got drunk, woke up at 2:00AM feeling real bad, took a shower and walked out to the deck of my friend's parents trailer and laid in a lounge chair. My friends finally found me at 1:00PM the next day. Top side fried. EVERYTHING peeled. Very painful.

When I lived in French Polynesia we would sometimes picnic on a motu (little reef island, like a key, only TINY) after church on Sunday. Coconut palms grew on the motus and provided shade, so I never worried too much (I'm also an easy tanner).

Except after the hurricane blew through, the palm trees had no fronds left. I got a burn on my back that a few weeks later had me shedding the human equivalent of "pork rinds" in my sheets at night.

That was the only significant sunburn I've ever had, but it was a doozy.

Went to Hawaii for a 3 week vacation in the sun and sand. Sunscreened up everywhere but the bottoms of my feet the 1st day. Laid on my stomach reading a book for to long and man was that miserable. Hobbled around like I was fire walking.

A long time ago, when "sunscreen" was only baby oil or Coppertone tanning oil my family spent a week on Long Beach island in NJ. I was blond, freckled and could sunburn standing in the light of a full moon. My parents couldn't stand my whinning about having to go out with a shirt and long pants on so I went to the beach with only my swim suit on like all the other kids one morning. Later, I was in shock, in the bath tub packed in ice, and ultimately in the ER being treated for various burns over about 75 % of my littile body. It was a lesson well learned. The highest rated sunscreen now lets me be in the sun for about 2 hours before the tingling starts. I often think that if real sunscreen had been aroung when I was young, my life, at least as far as being outdoors, would have been so much different.

Myrtle Beach as a kid, a couple of times. You NC/SC guys and gals know the routine. Get to OD on Sunday. Monday morning you talk mom and dad into renting you one of those Converse canvas rafts. "Surf" all morning long on the raft, eat a quick lunch and do it again all afternoon. Not only did I get burnt, bad, but the hours on that canvas raft combined with the salt and sand rubbed my front raw too. Oh to be a kid again.

Drunk at Myrtle, watched the sun come up...
decided w/ typical drunken logic...
since I'm gonna pass out, why not lay out?

But...I thought I had better put on sunscreen so I dont burn...
probably used 1/2 the bottle, and thought I applied it smoothly & evenly...

Take towel, lay out on verrry sloped beach.
Wake up who knows when later with someone shaking me...

I had rolled off the towel and down towards the waterline.

Walked back into hotel room, and passed out and fell on the floor.
Woke up that night on said floor, hurt like hell...
Went to the bathroom, and on my back were 2-3 big handprints where I slapped sunscreen on
standing out in vivid contrast to the flaming red everywhere else...

On the floor where I fell was the sand equivalent of the chalk outline of a body at a murder scene...
So what did I do about it?
.
.
.
.
Hell I was 19 or so...you know what I did!
Went out drinking again, figured it was 'medicinal' and would ease the pain...
.
.
.
.
Next week I was peeling 'papyrus' sheets off my back you could write letters on.

No freekin wonder I get skin cancers cut off my back occasionally nowdays...

Dermatologists are very busy in Florida. Winter or summer, before going out on the boat (walkaround with a hardtop) I put Bullfrog 36 on my face, ears, neck, arms, hands, legs and feet. Then I usualy wear a long sleeve UV resistant fishing shirt.

Sunburn is for tourists.

Article 15 - Is that destruction of government property, or "too stupid to breath"?
