Default HVAC question

I have a Trane system with ComfortLink thermostats that continue to fail. The failure is the wifi connection, and two thermostats have been replaced three times (no questions asked, which tells me there is a known issue). Wifi is not critical, but I do use the feature for checking outside temperature and weather advisories. Also, I paid for it.

My HVAC contractor tells me that the comfortlink must be used due to the fact that my house has zoning. I have one unit upstairs with two zones, and one unit downstairs with two zones.

The claim seems odd to me. I would have expected zoning to be old technology, and if everyone and their brother is making thermostats (my automation company makes them; amazon makes them, and amazon's brother alibaba makes them), then zone control would be a typical feature. Is the claim BS? Or is there something unique about Trane zoning that limits use of other thermostats

System info
Trane 4TTR70 XR17 2 stage 17 SEER AC
TUH2 XL95 2 stage 96% gas furnace
ComfortLink II zone control

It is common for sophisticated zoning systems to be controller specific. As with A Carrier Infinity zoning, Only communicating Infinity systems and only Infinity controls (thermostats) will allow that damper system to work. We are a Trane dealer, but I don't use Trane in zoning applications. But yes, it is not uncommon for only one type of thermostat to work in conjunction with a specific zoning system.
