Default Facebook is da debul!

I can't be alone here.

I'm 30 years of age. I HATE Facebook. In fact, I hate all social media (except for ThT, obviously). I do use Snapchat heavily because it works 100x better than sending a picture via text. My buddies and I use it to show what we're working on, etc. I've never taken a selfie. I haven't used Facebook in the 8 years since I graduated college.

However, my family is ABSORBED by Facebook. I mean absolutely addicted. And they get all bent out of shape about who said what, and who commented on what, etc. Our son was born Sunday and one of the first questions they asked is when they could put it on Facebook.

Then my mother is here and she wanted a picture with him and immediately gave him back to put said picture on Facebook and start watching the comments come in, and reading them aloud.

I simply don't understand it, and I can't be alone here. I liked Facebook for sharing photos, but now there are other ways to share pictures with friends and family that don't involve receiving hollow comments from people you haven't talked to in years. It's so bad that at holiday celebrations they will gather in the dining room and decide what to put on Facebook.

Obviously I love em all, but I'm about ready to say something...like hey let's just enjoy being together vs caring what other people think. My wife's family is the exact opposite. They don't really use it, and if they do they don't really give a crap what anybody thinks.

Rant over.

And don't get me started on Twitterface.

I'm with you brother. I hate social media although I do use Linkdin. I know there is a lot of good that comes from it, but it has a lot of drawbacks too IMO. Seems like it's making the world a much smaller place and I'm not so sure that is a good thing.

I honestly don't care that you're at the grocery store and you're going to the movies next....

Yes I agree it's good for staying in touch...but when your activity revolves around Facebook and what you're going to put on there.. your priorities are all mixed up.

LinkedIn I think is Facebook for professional adults. Very good tool.

Never had one and not many of my friends do. We were all out of college when Facebook came out, so we never really got into it. Seems much more popular with the women.

I have Facebook, but seldom use it. I honestly don't care about 99% of the crap that I see posted there. However, it has come in handy when I have needed to quickly get a hold of someone (family, mostly) because they're always on the damn thing. Meh, don't care about your dog, what you had for dinner last night, your wonderful vacation, your politics or your ugly kid.

I'm with you man. Social media is partly responsible for my family being at odds up in PA. That isn't really an accurate statement, it's their own damned fault for using it so much and not communicating face-to-face enough any more. I'm soooo glad I'm down here in NC and have never been on FB.

On the other hand, my wife had her 20th class reunion a couple years ago and it really got them all reacquainted before the reunion. That's about the best outcome I have ever seen from FB.

BTW - congrats on the new addition

I don't do FB, there is nothing "social" about these social media. These days people don't call each other anymore, its all about text and emails, and FB crap, doesn't get more anti social than that.

It came out the summer before I went to college. Back then it had fields you could put in to sort by dorm (even floor), and you could put your class schedule in and see who all was in class.

In other words...it was a way to get a scouting report on the hot coeds that lived in your floor or were in your class.

It was awesome originally. Then they took away the .edu address requirement and added all the other fluff and it promptly sucked.

Also, thanks for all the congrats guys.

Preach on brother boater.

I closed my FB account 10 years ago and I haven't looked back. I do use Twitter for random stuff and to post research highlights. I use Snapchat only as a weapon against my students. IMHO LinkedIn has gone to the crapper. If I see one more person post a flipping math problem to see how smart you aren't I am going to puke.

As a platform I find FB to be fascinating. But it has eroded some of our moral fabric. I equate it to being trapped in a highschool yearbook that is updating 10000 times a second. That's just not healthy. I wouldn't recommend anyone sign up for an account.

That about sums it up.

Maybe I'm behind on LinkedIn, haven't messed with it much in about a year.

I'm on Facebook and twitter. The only reason is to post a comment on the nature sites I watch. Other than that, I think it is ridiculous. It is ruining the social order of the way people react with each other. Not only that but it is costing employers money in lost time.

This. Social media brings out the absolute worst qualities in human nature, and may very lead to the downfall of mankind as we know it. And no, I don't think a boating/fishing message board qualifies as "social media", so I don't believe I'm a hypocrite. Social media's primary purpose is self promotion and building your "brand". Whatever the hell that means.
