Ever see Orange Roughy on the menu? Comes from the Slimehead family. Chilean Sea Bass, a name for the menu, is really Patagonian Toothfish. See how many would order that. Dolphin, the fish, became the Hawaiian Mahi Mahi for obvious reasons. And what ever happened to Turbot, was very popular at one time.

Turbot (queen trigger fish) was my grandmothers favorite, very sweet meat, dark but not gamey.
Skin was like leather, had to peel it off, dried is was like 80 grit sandpaper.

Wonder how many people would change their mind about calamari if the menu said "squid". As fish species have dwindled, what used to be tossed or skipped has often been renamed. See the article:

Escolar. Never heard of this fish until recent articles of fake tuna started showing up on Yahoo.

Another one that wasn't around until recently is talapia. Real name is chiclid, and there is controversy about it, whether it's really safe to eat. Seemed like it was on a lot of menus for a while, not much anymore.

Sort of. Tilapia are in the Cichlid family, but there are others that are not. In other words, all Tilapia are Cichlids, but not all Cichlids are Tilapia.

Those are just nasty fish.

Plenty of other weird fish have been showing up on menus. I've seen swai on menus. That just tells me not to eat any fish at that restaurant.

Swai. I saw this in Costco I believe. Have no idea where this new "orange roughy" comes from.

Sounds like something you would get from Bill Cosby.

My favorite from back home is "Walleyed Pike".

It's Asian catfish, I believe. Also sold in some places as grouper or snapper.
