Default New to THT and Salt

Hi folks,

So I am new to the board, though I have researched a lot here while searching for a boat. I have been fishing and boating my whole life, but I am just now, at 51, moving to salt water. The wife and I have bought a place down in Brunswick, GA, and I am going to simi-retire and go fishing. Towards this end, we have an offer in on a '93 Grady White Dolphin 25 with Twin Suzuki 175s. I intend to stay pretty close to shore and in the sounds for a while, but we will eventually want to run out to the reefs.

I can not find any mention of licensing requirements for 25' boats, but I may be missing it. If none are required, what are y'alls suggestions on training courses I should take for general safety and insurance?

Thanks for any advice. I look forward to being part of the discussions and learning all I can here.

Tight lines!

Thanks for the welcomes. Not ashamed to share a pic of the wife, though "Ol lady" may be a bit inaccurate

Now...any suggestions on what kind of training courses I should take?

I like the power squadron courses. google USPS squadron for a chapter in your area.

Is that your daughter or wife? wow!

First and foremost you need to get some Salt Life shirts and caps. Also some Salt Life and Costa stickers to stick on your vehicle. Welcome aboard!

We get that question a lot. Thanks for the course advice - though when I first saw it I wondered what the postal service had to do with boating. So is there any required certifications for a 25 footer in the ocean, or is it just advisable to take the courses - which I intend to do before taking her out.

Also found a course called "Boating Skills & Seamanship" offered by the USCG Auxiliary that will be given just a couple weeks after we move to the coast. Has anyone taken it? Just want to be sure I know what I'm doing before going out in an environment so much different than the lakes and rivers I am used to.

Dont forget the yeti stickers, find some free bean bags and always tow your boat with a f450 or a rav4.
