Keeping the os current really slows down old iPads and phones.

Reset might help

Is this the iPad 2, available from March 2011 to March 2014?

Same here. My Ipad has become unusable, if it doesn't crash, it crawls.

My thought is, Apple treats it's phones and Ipads as throw away items and if they are beyond a few years old they stop working.

Problem with not remaining somewhat current is you can't update or use some apps.

The issue with the iPad 2 slowing down/crashing has to do with the IOS and updates Apple "recommended" you do. The iPad 2 only has 512K of RAM, while the new ones come with 2+GB, which IOS really needs. You can do all the resets and remove unwanted apps all you want, but it doesn't change the fact that there just isn't enough memory to run the OS. I had the original iPad mini, and just replaced it last week with a new one because it got to the point I couldn't read websites without it either crashing or Safari reloading the page endlessly.

Crap....crap and crap.
I was afraid that was the issue.

These can't be opened up and the memory upgraded for under $150.00

Will that help, or like someone else mentioned, it's the memory, not the stuff.

Or you can reset it and not do any updates and just run basic stuff

I keep wondering if I should upgrade my trust old Ipad as well

I have one I use for personal/business through Verizon that has cell service which I need and just can not bring myself to buy another one

I have a new ipad that was given to me by local school district where I am on Board of Trustees but I just refrain from using it for personal use, hell about the only thing I use that for is to monitor our camera system around our house

Just wondered if newer ones were that much better/faster

Time to upgrade. That's ancient in computer years.

I have an iPad Air 2, bought in 2015, and I figure when iOS 11 or 12 drops it'll be time to replace it.

They are.

I upgraded my Verizon iPhone last Black Friday and as part of that they were offering a new 32GB iPad for $59. They might have some sort of incentive now too.

Of course you had to activate it but it runs $10 a month for a device like that. So I grabbed one.

Took one of my really older 16GB iPads to Best buy and got a $80 Debit Card for it. Wasn't worth much anyway.

Planned obsolescence, no doubt in my mind Apple is guilty of this. Notice how they push the updates on you almost daily, then if you update with the new OS they'll feed you some line of shit about how your $700 device you bought 2 years ago doesn't have the capacity to support the new OS so you will need to buy the newest device.

Simple way to deal, do not upgrade the OS.. Avoid it like the plague, just keep rolling over the reminder.
