Default I-85 shut down in Atlanta

Gonna be a tough commute for a lot of folks, for a while. Apparently a large fiber-optic cable on fire under the bridge, causes overpass to collapse.

Atlanta traffic is usually so good, this shouldn't be much of a hiccup...

I am so happy that I really no longer have to travel to Atlanta for work.

It's fun once I was there and on foot, but getting there by car was always a nightmare. 85 being shutdown is going to literally be a nightmare for so many people.

I lived in the area (Alpharetta & Woodstock) between 2001 - 2006. Great place to live but the traffic sucks! This has to be a real disaster. It looks like the area is at the split of I75 & I85 (whoever designed these interstates to merge in the middle of a major metro area should be shot) and just south of 400.

That is crippling.

That seems strange. I did not see that anywhere online now though. I did see that they stored a large amount of pvc pipe under the bridge and that may be what caught on fire. PVC will burn like crazy! Stupid to store that under a structure.

"The cause of the fire remained undetermined Thursday night, but Deal said in a televised statement that authorities were focusing on the possibility that polyvinyl chloride (PVC) piping commonly used in construction may have ignited for some reason. WXIA reported that large amounts of PVC pipe were stored under the bridge."

Wow. So the concrete and steel aint gonna burn - maybe the heat expanded the rebar or girders to the point where the cement cracked or more likely steel joints gave.??? Must have been a real hot fire for a real long time.....

"Atlantans already suffered through the fourth-worst traffic in America and the ninth worst in the world, Inrix, a global transportation research firm, reported last year. But the impact of the collapse is likely to be felt for some time across the Southeast."

They could do a temporary fix. There are companies with pre fabbed bridge sections
