Default Costa Del Mar Marine recommendations?

I've been looking for a 26' to 30' Regulator or Contender and a broker down in Florida, Costa Del Mar Marine, has many listed. Every time I call or email, I don't get a response for a day or two and he always makes it sound like I need to make an offer or I'll lose out on the deal. His last email said that the boat I'm interested was taken off the market but he'll hold it 48 hours if I make an offer and send him a deposit. Obviously, this made my radar go up.

This guy has over 200 listings and appears to be a legit dealer but something seems a little off to me. Does anyone here have any first hand knowledge or experience with Costa Del Mar Marine? The broker's name was L.R. Bent.

Thanks!

So I just received this email from the broker. Does this seem like it makes sense? I'm becoming more skeptical, especially since no one here can vouch for the broker. I keep asking to see the boat but don't get a response to that question.

The listing you had inquired about, may be back on the market. Our buyer is
trying to obtain a Co-Signer for his loan. Before we re-advertise, we come
to you first. This is another way we pride ourselves in customer service. We
will hold the vessel for 48 hours to make your decision. Please advise us
promptly as possible.

Please let us know that your still interested and what other vessels you
maybe interested in if he does obtain his Co-Signer.

Best Regards;

Limited time offer, just for you... yeah. It's not necessarily a scam, but it's definitely a salesman's play.

Be careful with them!!! There's a guy (search on here for L. R. Bentley) that's been hijacking ads for a while now. They just keep changing the name of the business every so often so that folks will forget about them. Same tactic, just a different name on the company. I've seen posts on here that folks had good experiences with him, and others that have been trying to get him into a court room. If it were me, I'd go with my gut and stay clear.

I see this game lots of times too... If you have an idea where the boat is located - take a look at the craiglist for that local. Some of the brokers pick from there and advertise and if they get a bite, they try to get the seller to join in too... Seller has no idea they are "shopping" the boat.

Email him back and let him know you are about to put a deposit on your second choice. So if this one is still available you will meet him today and go over the boat and not only put a deposit on it but pay for it Today! Play the game right back.

Thank you all for the advice here and by email. I ended up calling the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation to see if they had heard of L R Bentley and Costa Del Mar Marine. I was informed by them that L R Bentley was, in fact, a licensed Yacht and Ship Broker named Leslie Ray Bentley through Blue Marlin Yacht Sales and that he had his licensed canceled recently by the State. They could not give me more information but asked me for information on his new company (which I found odd).

Doing a search on Blue Marlin Yacht Sales, I found everything I needed to know about this broker. In addition, one of the listings that he had listed on his Yacht World page was also listed here on THT. I spoke via email to the owner and was informed that the boat recently sold and they had no idea why it was listed with this broker. Funny, because Leslie Bentley told me via email that I could make an offer on THAT boat and send him a deposit.

Needless to say, I will not be dealing with Costa Del Mar Marine or this broker. Shady. Thank you to everyone who warned me about this broker.

Wow! This conversation only confirms what I just experienced on the phone with him myself. Sketchy! Sketchy! Sketchy!

And I confirmed myself, Florida cancelld his license in March 2017. Supposedly he had it since 2006, but claimed on the phone that he did not need it anymore that he is "just a salesman".

Thank you THT!

So, I am helping a buddy try and find a boat and I find 2 that he likes, both listed with Costa Del Mar Marine. I call but get an answering machine. Oddly, both boats have nearly identical descriptions. I look up the name of the broker on THT and I find this thread. Unreal.

This guy contacted me on here about my boat acting like he was a buyer and interested in buying my boat even though it wasn't for sale. Since everything is for sale for the right price I sent him some photos and information on it bc I thought he was a potential buyer. Then he went silent and next thing I know he's got my boat listed on Boat trader for much more than what I had said I would sell it for! I've contacted the number multiple times trying to get them to remove the listing with no luck! This guy is a POS!!! Don't do any business with him. I'm trying to figure out what legal matters I can push to get my boat off his listing.

Mr. Bentley is going under a new name now. "Andrew Van Cash <andrewvancash@gmail.com>"

E-mailed me as Andrew the buyer then call me as Leslie Bentley from Costa Del Mar to represent Andrew.

"Happy Holidays! Sorry for delayed response, very busy with work in the Holidays. We just sold our 336 and interested in yours and another 284 in MD. Our Dealer from Costa Del Mar Marine will reach out to you today, as either of the 2 will be written up as a Trade In to save on Sale Tax."

Buyer and Seller beware!

I just got the exact same story.

When I replied to “Andrew” with links to threads here, he said I was making a mistake and he (“Andrew”) had been dealing with with Costa Del Mar for 20 years.

Which seems hard to believe since a quick Sunbiz confirms that Costa Del Mar Marine was incorporated this year...
