Default How does communism work?

This isn't meant to be political, it's a serious question for those that may have true knowledge of how a communist system works. Sure, we have all heard how communism works, but how does it really work for the citizens?

For example, a restraurant. I know there are many, small family style restaurants that would appear like a typical restaurant in the free world, but how do they actually work? Does the "proprietor" go to the government and pitch them the idea of a restaurant and compensation plan and it gets approved? How are the employees paid? Who creates the menu, sets the prices, etc?

Good question, my guess would be that everything you produce belongs to the state, in a sense you are partnering with the state. The assets of the business belong to the state. The state would monitor your books and you would be allowed to keep whatever the state decided you could keep.

There are no restaurants in a communist society as there is no allocation mechanism for the seats or price determination for quality tiers.
In fact, the misallocation of labor and product would be abhorred.
There hasn't been a real communist society of any substance ever.

They get rights on everything. You have a cow they come take it to feed or provide milk. Many times you get rations. Anything you produce is subject to state confiscation and redistribution.

Source: ex in laws who lived in communism in Romania and father who traveled to Russia for work in the 80s

Modern communism may be different as evidenced by china and their obvious class systems.

In any of them talking bad about the ruling class or police or disobedience to many rules that suppress rights to speech are dealt with swiftly and strongly. They want no chance of people organizing for uprising. Religious freedoms are not allowed. Anyone who turns in an offender many times gets an incentive such as extra food rations.

It doesn't.

No one new is going to perfect it or do it better than those other guys. Despite what college kids, crazy men from Vermont or the media may dream about.

In pure theory it's not a bad form of government. Give what you can give and take only what you need. Add people to the equation and it falls apart, badly.

The Chinese model of communism seems to be working fairly well.

Not sure it can be called communism any more. More like a capitalist system run by dictators that claim to be communists...

I disagree. Communism is bad theory. It is a "they know better" scenario for those who actually buy in.

Socialism on the other hand is gray in theory. But it also doesn't work because of human nature. Socialist republics stand a chance.

Then we have capitalist republics which will fail given time.

Communism only works for people who wish to subordinate all their interests to a higher (nonself) authority. Therefore, people who have any self interest immediately corrupt or degrade "communism."

There are two ways for communism to be succesful:
1. Totalitarian regimes where a small few control "what ought to be" with absolute authority. Think USSR/Red China. Death/incarceration/relocation camps are necessary.

2. Theological schemes. All involved willingly submit to a "higher" set of ideals and willingly share any and all goods and services. Mormons preach it as the order that exists in the afterlife. They try to sell it amongst themselves by identifying everyone as "brother and sister." They, like other religions have co-opted familial structures to keep everyone in place.

3. Any of the various Cult related societies.

None will be stable of any period of time or generations of people.

It's terrific if you're at the top of the food chain. Horrible for everyone else.

Just watch this season of The Walking Dead to see how Rick and his group (lower class) have to deal with Negan and his group (ruling class).

Yeah it's TV drama but it shows how a Communist society works.

Communism works for the super elites until the masses rise up and massacre them. Communism means all factors of production are owned by the state and the elites dole out the rewards to a select few. The rest of the population are wards of the state. Under communism there are no private property laws or individual rights.....much like plantation life for the slaves. It is a shitty business model that has always failed.

Communism works for the communists, everybody else starves or is jailed. There are some great documentaries on North Korea out there if you want to get an insight, of how it works for the average person.

There are no restaurants in communism. The best you could hope for if you wanted to be a cook is to be assigned to cook for some of the higher ups.

For the people, they eat rations that are given to them by the government, they are assigned jobs by the government. If you are a cattle farmer, the state owns your cattle, you are given the same ration that the factory worker gets.
