Default Retirement Gift Coworker

Need opinions on a retirement gift for a guy at work. We really don't know him that well, but he has been here for the last 14 years. Nice guy and just comes in and does his work and leaves... I don't think he has ever missed a day. I decided we need to get him something. He works 3rd shift by himself so nobody really interacts with him.

I will get a cake for sure...

We have no idea what he does outside of work and he isn't married. The only hobby he has is programming.

I was thinking a Visa gift card.

Someone strike up a conversation with the guy. "What's next after retirement?" if he says fishing well then you know what to do.... any other response and use Google for something nice. A gift card is something an aunt that you talk to 2x per year gets you for your birthday.

I did ask him what his plans were and he mentioned he needed to start cleaning up his house. Not sure what that meant really... He lived with his mom and then she passed away years ago.

He is a very odd dude, but very nice.

Maybe Lowes or Home Depot card?

I don't want to get him a typical corporate retirement gift. I want something he can really use.

Yeah that's rough. If you are his manager or the owner maybe offer to take him and a guest and some colleagues to dinner then the gift card.

Visa gift card. Men don't give a shit about opening presents that they now need to find an excuse to use. I'm sure he'll appreciate the thought no matter what you do.

not knowing what he has, needs, or would like, I would think the Visa gift card would be best as it can be used online or anywhere.for anything he wants.

Sounds like he is still living in his moms house and no one has been cleaning it since her death. May need lots of help cleaning that up, he can use the card to pay help as he needs it

I tend to agree. I'm also not going to make him stay and talk to all of us while we eat cake.. I'll bring him everything the night before. I think he would feel awkward around a bunch of us morons.

You don't ask, you just give him his gift and smile.

.......you could always slip him an envelop for a nice dinner somewhere.

What's all this nonsense about gift cards? What's wrong with cash if you have no imagination?

Honestly.. never thought about cash.

Found out he mentioned to somebody that he loves wine and cheese so going to get him a couple bottles. Then something else..

Maybe some wine wrapped in depends.
